2017 Mazda Cx 3 Gt Awd – I love small SUVs. It’s fair. It’s cheap. And it has many games and utility functions. This week the Dynamic Blue Mica (bright blue in non-car parlance) 2017 Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring AWD is our Driver of the Week. I drove its larger cousin, the Mazda CX-5, and was pleased to see how much I liked the smaller CX-3. I’ve driven the Jeep Renegade Sport 4×4 and the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 4×4, which are about the same size and price as the CX-3. I really like them, so I wanted to see how the Mazda CX-3 compares.

The CX-3 is a compact, 5-passenger SUV. It was powered by Mazda’s Skyactive-G 2.0L 4-cylinder 16-valve engine making 146 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque mated to a Skyactive 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The 2.0L 4-cycle engine is a powerful engine with quick acceleration that makes driving to the grocery store easy. Although the CX-3 is small, there’s plenty of room for 5, and plenty of rear cargo space, coming in at an impressive 10.1 cubic feet at 42.3 cubic feet with the seats up and the seats up. I have enough space and room to hold a week’s worth of grocery shopping in the back.

The CX-3 is a great car for a college class. It won the INHS Top Safety Pick in 2016 with 27/32/29 miles for the AWD version (29/35/31 for the FWD version), but a college kid could fill it. The interior looks very cool with white leather seats and black lux suede inserts with a touch or dark red leather on each armrest. Front and center is a large shift counter and a small digital speedometer in the lower left corner. It’s really cool, maybe a big city. Mazda is cheap from a safety perspective, but it’s cheap and it looks cheap. It is in black smoked plastic that appears above the dash cluster and displays the speedometer and Nav. When it first came up I wasn’t sure why because it took me so long to watch the show without going down. I looked up how to fix it and when I came back I saw the display. I prefer the displays you see in more expensive cars, but you won’t find them in a $28,000 SUV. I give Mazda credit for putting it in such a small car, and by the end of the week I used more than a pile of volcanoes.

The AWD Grand Touring CX-3 has a base price of $26,240 with the GT I-Activesense package for an additional $1,170 for a total price of $28,310. A very reasonable price for this large SUV. The GT I-Activesense package adds:

My favorite small SUV to date is the BMW X-1 and although the Mazda is not in the same class at almost half the price, the Mazda still does well and I like it. Since it won the INHS Top Safety Pick in 2016, it’s on my short list of cars to look out for when my 14-year-old starts driving (he currently says he wants a Ford F-250 diesel). The 2017 Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring AWD returns sportiness and utility to the SUV. Small hatchbacks are fun to drive as well as practical. So why aren’t the little cross and the hatchling the same thing?

Well, more mini crossovers are made, and most of them are very fun to drive. This week’s AWD Grand Touring Mazda CX-3 fits that bill.

The steering is light and lively with quick handling and quick acceleration when you switch to Sport mode on the dashboard. This is thanks to the 146 horse 2.0-liter I4 with the maximum torque of 146 revs exploding. The Mazda jumps out of traffic lights with gusto, but you have to shift into neutral or the engine will stall. It takes too long to turn and ends up sucking the gas mileage.

But hey, shifting into Sport mode is just as fun as shifting a manual transmission – almost.

Add in the practicality of all-wheel drive for low winter mileage and excellent fuel economy, and you have a nice and tidy ute, a crossover, instead of a small car or hatchback.

The CX-3 is Mazda’s smallest crossover, slightly smaller in size and wheelbase than the CX-5. Both are well managed.

However, small crossovers like this with a 101-2-inch wheelbase lack the ride quality. While the CX-3 is fine on the highway in Green Bay, it’s a little slow in the city. Road imperfections are sometimes a conversation. The speed is also correct if you are not using sport mode.

But shifts from the 6-speed Skyactiv Sport automatic transmission are smooth and the transmission engages well. It also has good traction (4-wheel drive) and fuel economy that will keep you smiling when gas prices hit their peaks.

Mazda uses its patented Skyactiv system for cleaner, more efficient fuel consumption. So far I have gotten 30.4 mpg on my 90% highway and 28.7 mpg in a mix of city and highway driving. I love the sauce. The EPA rates it at 27 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.

On the other hand, the Grand Touring is the highest trim level. Topping it all off is the interior finish, which not only has leather seats but three levels of heated front seats and a 6-way power driver’s seat.

The interior looks very sporty with white and black leather seats with dark red stitching. The dashboard has maroon leather trim on the doors and sides and carbon fiber trim on the steering wheel and door arms. Mazda also includes suede door inserts to give the CX-3 a premium look and feel.

Mazda Cx 5: Beauty That’s More Than Skin Deep

The manual/interactive steering wheel with radio, phone and cruise buttons is on the dash, and the dash is well laid out, with plenty of climate control buttons and automatic settings. So you can set it and forget it.

The CX-3’s radio/navigation screen is a good size, but Mazda doesn’t offer pre-programmed radio buttons on the dashboard. A button on the console is used to adjust the radio and other functions on the screen. This is better than the dashboard offered in other vehicles, but not as simple as the default six buttons on the dash. I know it’s from the 1950s, but it’s cool!

The seats are well made and supportive and have been praised by many riders. And although the car is small, four adults can sit comfortably as long as no one is too tall. Headroom is good, but rear legroom is tight when a tall front occupant pushes the seat back.

There is good cargo space behind the rear seat and the rear seat splits and folds for larger loads. The rear hatch is manual, but that’s to be expected given the size and price of this crossover.

Standard on the Grand Touring model is an electric sunshade, and I’d say the sunshade extends to block the side sun. You know this is a shame for me and some expensive cars don’t offer these. Sheesh!

There are other solid safety features like a backup camera and blind spot monitor, both standard. This CX-3 GT costs $1,170 with the I-ActiveSense package. It adds parking radar control, city break assist, lane departure warning, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps and high beam control.

Other additions to the test CX-3 were minor and mostly for features, so the $26,240 base price only grew to $28,810, including $900 for the transmission.

If you can do without the leather interior and other frills, you can go with the Sport model with front wheel drive. It starts at $20,860, while the optional AWD model starts at $22,110.

The mid-level Touring version starts at $22,860 for front-wheel drive and $24,110 for AWD. A front-drive Grand Touring model starts at $25,890.

For the computer-savvy, there are plenty of connections, including two USB ports and a 12-volt outlet. A CD player is also standard. Other extras include heated electric mirrors, keyless entry and push start.
