We’d like more power (of course) to go with the sporty character, and we’re hoping to get the 2.5-liter turbocharged option that Mazda uses in the CX-9 and all-new CX-5. And the Mazda 6.

The 2019 is true to its roots with surprising attention to how it drives. The ride quality is firm but not harsh. Controlled shock absorption blocks the move from the new Mazda3’s independent rear suspension to a cheaper torsion beam setup for 2019, though the ground pavement reminds you. Steering response is excellent and brakes are solid.
With National Stick Shift Day coming up on July 16, credit Mazda for keeping the six-speed manual available — even though you can now only get it in the top-of-the-line hatchback and only in front four-wheel drive. .
With premium design and quality materials, the interior is beautiful if not beautiful. The top trim levels have a legitimate claim to being another premium car, and that’s before Mazda can add signature trim to the upper cabin. It’s very quiet, which adds to the impression of quality, and has low-gloss, soft knee-level surfaces, including welcome padding on the sides of the center console. Premium details on higher trim levels include fabric-wrapped windshield pillars and one-touch display windows all around, but much of the quality feel extends to lower trim levels as well. Design and quality hold up even in the back seat, even when space is tight.

Mazda 3 Shows A Porsche Like Obsession With The Details
The teardrop-shaped hatchback has a large cargo opening, but requires folding the rear seats for full use; Otherwise space is short. The new sedan, however, packs a lot more room down low — more than a third behind the rear seat than the hatch.
All-wheel drive separates the Mazda3 from the large compact crowd and checks the boxes for the most common small features of a premium brand. It is really useful in cold conditions, although the system seems ready to work with strong variable torque, but the well-planned chassis does not convince the latter.
2019 Mazda3 models earned a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety with top crash test scores and its Automatic Emergency Braking (on all models).
The heads-up display is really useful. It led to the windshield through a small pop-up plastic panel that was low and too low for tall drivers. Wireless charging is now also available in the lower console bin with plenty of room for larger phones. And Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now available on all but the base sedan (another notable omission).

The sedan-only 2019 Mazda3 base trim level starts at just under $22,000 destination, a few hundred dollars or more over the base versions of traditional automatic rivals. And the base Mazda3 sedan lacks the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and automatic emergency braking that many others have. Apparently, Mazda has decided not to compete with consumers. Pricing and features are more competitive as you move up and you end up with a loaded hatchback, which includes AWD that most rivals don’t offer, for $30,415 (including destination charge). And you get plenty of driver’s cars, although even at higher prices, you don’t get the long warranties (Hyundai, Kia and Volkswagen) or free scheduled maintenance (Chevrolet, Toyota) that add value to others. It has a better value argument if you look at it as a viable alternative to less luxury.
The interior is impressive, but space is lacking, especially in the back. Although the organizers had different views on the front seat, no one wanted to sit in the back seat. Knees are tight against the front seats behind all sized adults. The center hump challenges the middle seat. The roof line leaves tall adults in front of the headliner. Narrow openings and doors require a duck-and-roll to enter only the rear. And there are no visible air vents and no power ports in the back seat (unless you count extending the cable to the front console bin).
The multimedia system is new but not the best. The 8.8-inch widescreen display on the dash is no longer a touchscreen (even if it was fixed), and you now have no choice but to use a knob-and-button controller on the center console, which feels incompatible with a smartphone interface. The program has better graphics but still has a confusing menu structure that takes too many steps for many common things. And the response is always slower than most new programs.
It’s a brand new car, but the backup camera only has static lines instead of dynamic lines. It’s an old-school car with lofty ambitions that won’t impress us, as others do, with a 360-degree camera option on higher-priced trim levels. Again, driver assistance systems are generally nice to have, but driving in the sun has caused many drivers to receive warnings that the monitoring systems have been temporarily disabled. Well, two USB ports seems difficult these days.

The six-speed automatic shifts quickly and quickly for more power, but higher gears take forever to return to the engine’s pleasant power.
