2019 Mazda Cx 9 Touring Awd Suv

2019 Mazda Cx 9 Touring Awd Suv – While the Signature is attractive with all the bells and whistles, the CX-9 Touring with all-wheel drive and the Premium package offers many of the same features at a significant discount.

Where others are purely functional, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 is a three-row crossover SUV that offers plenty of style. It is one of the most beautiful family crossovers on the market, and it belongs to the luxury brands. Some overdue additions to the interior and creature comforts give it an overall rating of 6.2/10. For 2019, Mazda has added more desirable tech to keep the CX-9 fresh, including long-lived Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on Touring and newer, 3-year SiriusXM satellite radio, weather and traffic, and a new optional display, power features. and cut the pieces.

Mazda Cx 9 2019 Range Review

The 2019 CX-9 is available in Sport, Touring, Grand Touring and Signature trims, with front-wheel drive standard on all models, while all-wheel drive is optional for $1,800 for each trim. Every CX-9 comes standard with a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 250 horsepower on premium fuel, matching the V-6 power of many competitors. A 6-speed automatic transmission is the only option and feels dated compared to the relatively modern powerplant.

As a hallmark of all modern Mazdas, the CX-9 is attractive and engaging to drive, with light but direct steering and handling that would put some sedans to shame. This large crossover is designed with more comfort in mind than many other Mazdas, so expect a little less handling than some smaller models.

The 2019 CX-9 also delivers on safety, earning a five-star rating from the federal government and a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS, which focuses specifically on its optional active safety technology. We wish it was standard, but at least it’s available on all trims for an extra $1,290.

Unfortunately, forced induction doesn’t match top-notch fuel economy in this case, as the CX-9 only manages 23 or 24 mpg in combined daily driving.

The CX-9 is unusually handsome, especially for a crossover, so if style and features are paramount, but badges aren’t, the Mazda represents a near-luxury alternative to many more expensive options.

The 2019 Mazda CX-9 proves that crossover SUVs don’t have to sacrifice style for practicality. For the most stylish sheetmetal of any SUV that doesn’t use a luxury badge, it’s easily the best looking in the segment and earns an 8/10 for styling inside and out. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

As many SUVs are more angular, the CX-9 hardly makes straight lines, showing that curves can still be effortlessly stylish. The sleek front end, sporty silhouette and tapered rear end with large wheel arches and sleek LED headlights make for a luxury-looking SUV at a serious discount that looks good in almost any color except white.

A low dashboard and clip-on infotainment screen keep the interior relatively simple, while smart touches like door panel vent trim give this mainstream crossover a premium feel. The Signature trim adds fine leather and real wood, but the base-level materials still feel lacking up top.

Mazda Cx 9 Signature Awd: Pros And Cons

The 2019 Mazda CX-9 is quintessentially Mazda, which means handling performance is paramount. While the only powertrain option is solid, it could do with a better transmission and a more powerful hybrid model, earning it a 6/10 in that class. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

All CX-9 models are powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 with 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, providing the same output as the V-6 versions of many of its competitors. On regular fuel, the output drops to 227 hp, so make sure you get the best result.

Front-wheel drive is standard across the range and all-wheel drive is optional, but the CX-9 only offers a 6-speed automatic transmission, which feels decidedly dated and a bit slow. It also takes a marginal fuel economy penalty compared to the competition. Fortunately, this Mazda performs in the same area as all its stablemates: handling. The CX-9 handles like a very small SUV, and while the steering is a little light, turn-in is precise and grip is excellent, especially with four-wheel drive. While the CX-9 isn’t as comfortable as some others in its class, it could be a lot better with smaller wheels, namely the standard 18-inch ones.

The 2019 Mazda CX-9 is billed as a three-row family crossover, but it’s best used with a third row. For quality, it gets 7/10 on our scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

Review: 2019 Mazda Cx 9 Fwd Touring

While most trims get power seats as standard, the CX-9’s thrones could use a bit more cushioning, as most are relatively firm even in higher trims. Second-row passengers fare better, with more legroom and armrests than the Honda Pilot, though the seats are also relatively flat. The CX-9’s third row is clear and should be kept as such, only used to fit children as there isn’t enough room for adults.

Behind the third row, the CX-9 manages 14.4 cubic feet of cargo space, but most of it is below the window sill, so tall objects won’t fit easily. That number increases to 38.2 cubic feet with the third row in place, and we recommend keeping it that way most of the time.

The 2019 Mazda CX-9 offers strong safety scores and active technology that, while not standard, is available on every trim.

A five-star overall rating in federal crash tests and an IIHS Top Safety Pick are strong indicators of the 2019 Mazda CX-9’s safety prowess, and while active safety technology isn’t standard, it’s optional on every trim. It earns a safety rating of 7/10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

The 2019 CX-9 received five stars from the NHTSA, but only four stars in both the driver and passenger front crash and rollover categories. The IIHS is apt to award it a top Safety Pick for 2019, but the “+” mark is missing due to “passable” headlights, a common problem with crossover SUVs this year. Front collision avoidance technology is rated “excellent” but only comes as an optional $1,290 package on the base Sport trim, though it’s included on higher trims. The tech suite includes blind spot monitoring, active lane control, lane departure warnings, a surround camera system, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with forward collision warning and automatic high beams.

Three-wheeled crossovers are popular, but can get very expensive very quickly. Fortunately, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 offers the best value in the middle of the range, so skip the delicious signature trim to save a pretty penny.

It’s good value for money, but the 2019 CX-9 lacks some features we think should be standard, and the infotainment system is fine with us. We give it 5 out of features. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

Available in four trims – Sport, Touring, Grand Touring and Signature – there’s no shortage of CX-9 variants, all with varying levels of luxury. The Sport model comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, three rows of seats, Bluetooth connectivity and a 7.0-inch infotainment screen, and offers power seats and active safety for an additional $1,290. The Touring trim adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for 2019, along with leather, an additional 1-inch infotainment screen, a power tailgate, and power front seats as standard. This combination is easily the best value in our book at just $36,525 for the front-wheel drive model. The Grand Touring trim adds 20-inch wheels, active safety features, a dual-pane sunroof, parking sensors, a head-up display, heated front and second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, and adaptive headlights. The Signature trim CX-9s is top-of-the-line, with Nappa leather seats, Bose audio, rosewood trim, LED headlights and interior accent lighting. Although the infotainment system has been updated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it can still be difficult to use if the interface has to be clicky. Manually entering navigation items can be a patient thing.

Although combined fuel economy is average, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 could benefit from a more efficient model than a hybrid.

The 2019 Mazda CX-9 relies on its turbocharger for average fuel economy, but without an older transmission and a hybrid, it’s not enough. It earns a 4/10 on our scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

Front-wheel-drive CX-9s manage 22 city, 28 highway and 24 combined mpg, according to the EPA, while all-wheel-drive models drop to 20/26/23 mpg. Premium fuel is required to achieve maximum power, but if you can live with the loss of performance, you can use regular fuel instead. For 2019, Mazda’s three-wheeled SUV is now available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other new optional features for the CX-9 include a surround camera.
