It was given as a Christmas present. I wasn’t sure what feedback to leave as another chess set was ordered but the recipient liked it better than the other so we left it. The seller sent the wrong item, but we didn’t give him a chance to fix it, so we’ll just report a positive experience with the above disclaimer. kings with beautiful urn-shaped tops and spiked ends, queens surpassed. with ball points and spikes, bishops as split mitres, knights as horses’ heads, arms as escutcheons, balustrade buttons and pawns with ball points, in a green wooden biscuit box (probably of later K date) with sliding lid.
A hairline crack to the top of the king, a natural flaw in the center of the king stem, and a further faint, faint hairline crack to the bottom of the queen. Good patina for boxwood.

The chess set is made of black and natural lacquered orange wood. The King is 4-0 inches tall with a base diameter of 1.6 inches. An attractive feature of penny chess is a unique horse. Somewhat flat and simple, Knights have their own appeal – for some it’s an acquired taste. The chessmen are housed in a cedar box on their original hinges with the maker’s name and address burned into the lid. This particular chess set was designed around 1945. Chess players in brand new condition. The set appears unused. The Sutton Coldfield chessboard and chess timer shown are not part of this sale but can be purchased elsewhere on this page.
