We now have the Mazda CX-60, which is not only built on a new “big platform” but is also the brand’s first model with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. In addition, the CX-60 should be more compatible with the mainstream segment that Mazda is trying to reach.
At 15.5 feet long, 6.2 feet wide, and 5.5 feet tall, the CX-60 is certainly not small. With 323 hp (241 kW), eight-speed automatic and four-wheel drive, does this SUV live up to Mazda’s promised personality?
Mazda’s Kodo design language allows the CX-60 to stand out as a model from the Japanese brand and stand out from the crowd of mid-size SUVs. However, compared to the CX-3 or CX-5, the front end has a lot more weight.
The tall radiator grille with long snout, bright signature wing, straight LED matrix headlight design, and short rear no doubt mean something different underneath. Of course, there’s a new platform with a longer engine and rear-wheel drive under the weight-lifting metal skin.

Under the hood, Mazda packs a 189-hp 2.5-liter Skyactiv G gasoline engine with a 129 kW electric motor and a 355-volt lithium-ion battery with a storage capacity of 17.8 kWh. Combined output is 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. With this equipment, the CX-60 is not only the brand’s first PHEV, but also the most powerful Mazda product to date.
The hybrid powerplant is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission without a torque converter, and a heavy-duty rear-wheel drive system called I-Activ AWD is also standard, distributing power as needed. On paper, the CX-60, weighing about 4,500 pounds, can hit 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. It’s definitely faster than the MX-5.
Speed is electronically limited to 124 mph (200 km/h) in hybrid mode. When the batteries are full, you can theoretically drive up to 39 miles (63 km) on electric power alone. However, the electric speed is limited to 87 miles per hour (140 km/h), and if you exceed this point, the gasoline engine is automatically changed.
This PHEV has the potential to be an incredibly fun vehicle to drive. In addition to a low center of gravity and rigid body with double wishbone front and a multi-link rear suspension, the CX-60 features the MX-5’s Kinematic Posture Control driving stabilization program to reduce body roll. Looking at everything on paper, we think it could be a very fun SUV for daily tasks.

But what you see on paper doesn’t always translate into real life. Slipping behind the wheel, we hit the start button for a 62-mile (100-kilometer) drive around the Portuguese coast, where the CX-60 is impressed by its interior curves. It should be noted that this particular car is still a pre-production model that has not yet been completely finished.
In this way, we are sure that the small grinding sound when you shift from first to second gear, as well as the whistling sound of the electric motor, will disappear in production. It must be better, as neither sound matches the high-end expectations of the CX-60.
However, the rest of the effect burns in our memory in a completely positive way. The petrol engine sounds great and the CX-60 drives like a Mazda. The steering is nice and direct, the chassis manages the balance between comfort and sport well, the brakes respond with surprising passion, and the hybrid system doesn’t let itself go out of whack, out of control when the individual parts are engaged. They do the same thing.
However, don’t expect the MX-5 to be brilliant. You’ve gone too far for that. Competition is the best way to classify treatments. We find ourselves somewhere between the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (more comfortable) and the BMW X3 (more sporty).
