Ballew Jewelers, a staple of Rooi Bank since it was founded as Reussille Jewelers in 1886, is leaving town, leaving a symbolic and tangible void in a city center beset by tough economic times.

“It’s terrible. It’s terrible. For a business that’s over 100 years old, to close here is like death,” said Andrew Gennusa, owner of Zebu Forno.

Recently, street vendors holding signs and store signs have announced sales, but authorities are keeping mum on the reason for the closure. John Ballew, whose grandmother Sarah Ballew took over the business in 1930, declined to comment for this story. But a manager said last week that Ballew’s two other stores, in Freehold and Sea Girt, would remain open.

The store’s iconic “lollipop” clock on the storefront served as the town’s unofficial clock and faithful symbol of its commercial heritage shortly after Léon de la Reussille moved his store to this location, known as building name Blumenberg. 1902, according to local historian Randall Gabrielan.

Alan Fisher, a diamond dealer who first worked at Ballew, said the experience converted him to the jewelry business and led him to open his own store, A.H. Fisher Diamonds opened in 1983. Having one less competitor in town may be a good sign for his business, he said, but it’s sad overall.

“Empty storefronts send a negative message to the city,” Fisher said, adding that operations in Red Bank have become “survival of the fittest.”

Ballew’s departure could be directly correlated with a decline in business for the city’s businesses, merchants said. Gennusa said he would lose four to five customers a day because Ballew employees were often at Zebu for lunch. And closed stores reduce the number of customers coming in for lunch or coffee, he said.

Gennusa is already staring at a dark hole opposite the Broad Street Ashes Cigar Club after it was closed by government-appointed receivers last June. Like everyone else, his business suffered from vacancies at the once famous club.

“Unfortunately, that’s what’s happening right now,” said Patty Siciliano, Ballew’s neighbor and owner of Funk & Standard.

But Siciliano and Fisher, who say they are still optimistic about Red Bank, see the bright side.

“This will pass and we will learn a lot from it,” Siciliano said. “I hope the big guy comes back.”

Fisher said that even after Ballew left, other longtime businesses were holding on in tough economic times. Fisher, who recently moved into 46 Broad, said his block has particularly great potential and is showing signs of life, with updated restoration equipment and Red Ginger Home arriving last week.

“These are three newly renovated showrooms in Red Bank. This is not a new store,” Fisher said. “The stores in the village are always high quality, service-oriented and, for the most part, owner-operated. You don’t find such a mix in shopping centers.”

John Ballew also owns the Broad Street building where he has operated the store for 108 years, according to property records. His father, James Ballew, retired earlier this year after working at the company since 1953.
