How Long Will Tesla Batteries Last

How Long Will Tesla Batteries Last – Tesla Model 3 with 50,000 miles: Battery degradation? We finally have some hard data for the Model 3.

The question of how much battery capacity will be lost over time arises for many potential (and new) electric vehicle owners. Now we have some hard data from existing Tesla Model 3 owners that may help reveal the answer.

How Long Will Tesla Batteries Last

Elon Musk said earlier this year that the Tesla Model 3’s drive unit and body are designed to last a million miles. However, the battery has a minimum life of 1,500 charge cycles which should translate to 300,000+ miles (standard range / standard range plus) to 500,000 miles (long range variant).

Your Guide To Ev Batteries: Premature Death, Range Loss And Preservation

A charge cycle is when you have used 100% of the battery’s rated capacity. And, keep in mind, there is no need to drain the battery from 100% – 0% on the way. To do this, we can understand the charging cycle through a simple example: let’s assume that today you drive your car 120 miles (50% reduction on SR +) and plug it in that night and charge it to 100% and you go on a trip as far as 120 kilometers the next day, reusing 50% of the battery – this would count as a ‘cycle’ according to Apple Inc.

To put things in perspective, according to the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, Americans drive an average of 13,476 miles per year. So to get to 300,000 – 500,000 miles will take a long time for the average Joe.

Tesla’s warranty covers the Model 3 battery pack ‘8 years or 120,000 miles’ for the long-range variant and ‘8 years or 100,000 miles’ for the standard and standard range-plus. So, based on the chart above, it takes the average Joe about 3.7 years to drive 50,000 miles. This means Tesla’s 100,000 – 120,000 mile warranty is enough to cover 6-8 years for most average drivers.

But not everyone drives like an average Joe. Twitter user @TeslaMiles collects data for Tesla owners with the highest mileage

. The 76 highest-mileage Model 3 owners listed have accumulated 2.9 million miles, which translates to an average of 39,372 miles driven per car.

One of the high-value Model 3 owners on the list (#8) is Matthew from the Tech Forum YouTube channel. Matthew shares his thoughts on how much battery degradation he’s seen in his Model 3 after driving over 50,000 miles.

It turns out that Matthew only lost about 2% of his total battery capacity after completing his first 50,000 miles. In the video, he explains that the first 50,000 miles of battery degradation is the biggest hit. After that, the drop in lost capacity seems to be always low.

Okay, but what about battery degradation when you hit 100,000 miles, or say, 200,000 miles? Teslanomics analyzed battery degradation using data from 2,636 Teslas. If you notice the blue band above, most Teslas are holding back

Even after reaching 100,000 miles. Of course, battery degradation can continue at 200,000 miles, but you’d be surprised how many epic Tesla road trips are still enjoyed by the high-mileage, all-electric road warriors out there. The age-old question asked by probably every Tesla owner and potential buyer of the luxury electric car: how long will my Tesla battery last?

By analyzing battery degradation data obtained by Tesla owners around the world – first compiled by Maarten Steinbuch in a Google Sheet – Teslanomics aims to help owners better visualize their Tesla’s expected range loss over time. First Maarten tapped the Dutch-Belgian Tesla forum to begin collecting data, requiring Model S owners to fully drain their Tesla batteries to a near-zero state before recharging them to 100% capacity. This process will theoretically provide more accuracy in terms of determining the actual capacity of the battery. This contradicts the earlier belief that batteries experience a “training effect” when they are not fully discharged and charged to full capacity. Tesla owners who constantly charge at a state of charge between 50% and 75% often report seeing less overall battery range, possibly because the state of charge in each cylindrical lithium-ion cell makes the entire battery pack “unbalanced” is .

Ben’s data analysis of battery state of charge according to vehicle age, total battery charge and number of kilometers driven/km, can be seen through the interactive map we provide below. Data can also be divided by region.

It is worth noting that battery performance and longevity are highlighted by Teslanomics based on Tesla’s 18650 lithium-ion battery cells currently used in Model S and Model X vehicles. Instead, Tesla’s huge Gigafactory facility in Nevada began mass production of high-performance, high-density 2170 cells high energy high earlier this year. The 2170 battery cells are currently used in Tesla’s Powerpack 2 and Powerwall 2 energy storage systems, and will be the basis for the upcoming Model 3.

Tesla believes that the 2170 is ideal for an electric car, with an ideal balance between price, density, weight and performance. Therefore, the company plans to eventually transfer its entire vehicle fleet to the last battery cell. If history is any indicator, it’s unlikely that Tesla will give more than 2 weeks’ notice of changes to minimize any unnecessary impact on sales of existing vehicles.

How Long Will Tesla Batteries Last

Although the battery degradation data and the accompanying Teslanomics analysis are only based on a small sample of total Tesla owners, the results match real-world data from high-mileage Model S driven over a recorded 200k miles (322k km). Electric mobility company Tesloop reported a 6% loss in range after 200 thousand miles of driving.

The Life Expectancy Of Tesla’s Model S Battery

Looking ahead to 2170 cell-based vehicles, we expect battery degradation to become more negligible, especially as Tesla continues to apply learnings captured in billions of miles of current vehicles equipped with 18650 packs.
