The new CR-V has grown in size, is comfortable and offers more space for occupants. It has its fair share of negatives, including the petrol CVT transmission not being for enthusiasts, a mediocre touchscreen system and limited boot space for five adults’ luggage. Still, the CR-V has managed to meet the requirements of a family-oriented SUV with good looks, a premium interior and car-like handling.

We’re testing the diesel-automatic version here, and apart from the cramped third row and fairly common infotainment system, there’s a lot to like about the new Honda CR-V.

Automakers in India tend to use the phrase ‘already new’, but when it comes to the latest version of the Honda CR-V, it’s apt. This 2018 model is the biggest generational change yet for the SUV, and is therefore a stronger proposition than ever. In fact, the CR-V now has a completely new look from the inside out, a new platform and, for the first time, a diesel engine. It’s safe to say that it represents Honda’s best effort yet to compete in the premium SUV segment, led as always by the Toyota Fortuner and now the Ford Endeavor and Skoda Kodiaq. Here we try the diesel-automatic version for the full road test treatment, and apart from the cramped third row and fairly common infotainment system, there’s a lot to like about the CR-V “already new”. That’s how it works.

There’s no doubt that the new CR-V has an eye-catching shape. It is, subjectively, a looker in a segment where road presence and visual cues are the norm. Slightly longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, the 2018 model has what it takes to be visually appealing. First, there’s the sharp front end with the full-LED headlights and fog lights that we like – they’re bright and look great when they’re on. What’s more, aggressively styled headlights with wing-shaped daytime running lights and widened wheel arches give the CR-V that much-needed oomph. The CR-V looks considerably wider than the old car and this is due to the sharp shoulder line that narrows towards the rear. At the rear, there is no longer a split tailgate arrangement; however, we’re glad the CR-V still retains the low-load edge.

At 4592 mm in length, 1855 in width and 1689 in height, the CR-V is quite big, but it’s not as tall or as long as large SUVs with a ladder structure like the Fortuner or Endeavour. That said, it matches the Fortuner in width, and the 2660mm wheelbase is pretty impressive for a soft-road vehicle.

Inside, the CR-V continues to impress. A big departure from the old-school look of the previous generation CR-V, the cabin is spacious and well-designed with some cleverly placed storage compartments that not only give it a luxurious feel but also practical fan for the daily driver. Build quality is adequate, and aside from the plastic steering wheel buttons, nothing here feels cheap or poorly put together. In fact, the design and layout of the cabin is the highlight of this car, given that this is where owners will spend time, it is a huge advantage to choose it over its rivals. For example, the dashboard is completely black with gloss black moldings, while the door pads are a mix of beige, wood inserts and gloss black moldings. Somehow this combination of materials works well to create a relaxing atmosphere. All things considered, the cabin definitely has character and while it’s not as contemporary as the Kodiaq, it certainly looks and feels better than the Fortuner.

The new CR-V makes a good impression when you sit in the front seat. Although you tend to sink deep into the seat rather than that “elevated” feeling you get in some of the rivals, space here is excellent for a mid-size SUV. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and legroom is also generous despite the large center console. Visibility is also excellent thanks to the huge glass surface and the driving position high enough to provide a good all-round view. But if that still wasn’t enough, there’s a segment-first camera-based system that improves the driver’s view of side traffic. Honda calls it ‘Lane Watch Camera’ and this system uses a camera on the passenger side mirror – the driver can have a live feed of the traffic in the car’s blind spot, on the infotainment screen. All said and done, it really works and offers a lot of comfort on our often congested roads.

Second-row space is good for this segment: there’s enough legroom, and the back seat itself is well-contoured and offers adequate thigh support. The back and base of the seat are well bolstered, although it’s best to have two occupants for that sense of protection. What’s not so impressive is the accommodation in the third row: there is no legroom for adults when the sliding second row is far back. Also, most rear occupants (presumably children) would be forced to sit with their knees up due to the high floor and low seat height, although to be honest the CR-V isn’t a good 7 seats. It’s more of a 5+2 offering where the third row is only ideal for short distances. We’d like to add that the 7-seater configuration is only available on the diesel version (the petrol version only seats five). Generally speaking, only short occupants can fit in the third row, and you may want to upsize your passengers and relegate shorter people here.

With all rows up, boot space is 150 litres, enough for a couple of soft bags at most. But with the last two seats down it can be expanded to 472 litres. Even better, there’s a total of 936 liters of luggage space when both rows are folded down.

Moving on to the pièce de résistance which is the 7-inch infotainment system. It’s nothing spectacular, but it offers decent sound quality. While the 7-inch screen looks premium, it’s not easy to use: the entire user interface looks branded and switching between menus takes a while. Even more, the graphics aren’t what you’d expect to see on a car in this segment. Similarly, the all-digital instrument cluster isn’t as impressive in sunlight, with the screen looking dull and not as sharp as we’d like. Having said that, it is a visual treat at night, which stands out from the rest of the interior.

The top-spec CR-V also features dual-zone climate control, roof-mounted air vents, push-button start/stop, power lumbar adjustment and a panoramic sunroof. In terms of safety, there is ABS with EBD and brake assist, front and side curtain airbags, ESC, motion adaptive power steering, driver attention monitor, electronic parking brake, automatic brake hold and pending assistant.

Things get a little interesting when we move on to streaming. With a 1.6-liter diesel engine, the CR-V isn’t the most solid choice in the segment in terms of displacement. With 120 hp and 300 Nm, it can even be considered underpowered and quite slow. That said, it does most of the time. Sound insulation is excellent and you don’t hear the engine noise in normal driving, but you can’t get over the fact that it’s a modest engine at best, offering adequate power around town, but it has no thrust at mid-range and this relentlessness emerges when leaving or in situations that require strong acceleration.
