If there’s one word to describe the Miata’s ride, it’s direct. Every aspect of the Miata is the perfect connection between car and driver. The seats may not be the most advanced or comfortable, but they are supportive and feel good on the road. The 2015 MX-5 Miata still uses hydraulic power steering, so feedback is plentiful and the overall steering is very responsive. The same can be said for the Miata’s brakes. Although the brake discs are small (only 11.4 inches in the front and 11 inches in the rear), the Mazda Miata is definitely made for the track with brakes that can stop this car in surprisingly little time.

Perhaps the simplest thing about the Miata is its transmission. The Miata also offers a five-speed manual and a six-speed automatic, but the six-speed manual is by far the best way to go. The six-speed transmission, as equipped in our Grand Touring tester, has a short throw and excellent shifting. Aside from perhaps the Honda Civic Si, the six-speed Miata might be one of the most fun transmissions to shift among affordable sports cars.
As big as this transmission is, the clutch is still light enough to work well as a daily driver. There was some delay in clutch engagement, but knowing that many Miata drivers split their time between the track and the road, we’re sure Mazda doesn’t have too many complaints about that.
There aren’t many fun filled tarmac stretches in Florida, but that didn’t stop us from bombing down the back roads with the roof down and huge smiles on our faces. It starts with a low seating position that may look more like a go-kart than any car today, with the back sitting a few inches above the tarmac. Combine that with a low beltline and small windshield frame, and the Miata still offers one of the best open-air experiences out of a motorcycle.
Of course, there’s a reason why the Miata is so popular with road racers. Balanced weight distribution is a great start, and the Miata complements it with a perfectly tuned chassis. All Miata Grand Touring trim levels come standard with a suspension package that brings a sport-tuned setup with Bilstein shocks and a limited-slip differential, but even so, the Miata won’t beat you to the pavement. Despite its short wheelbase and lowered sport suspension, the 2015 Mazda Miata feels as confident in corners as it does on a slow ride. We can only hope that the next-generation Miata exhibits the same dual-purpose qualities.

The biggest area where the 2015 Mazda Miata is showing its age is the interior. Cabin design was far from cutting edge when the NC Miata debuted, and while it’s still simple and practical, it doesn’t have any of the cool tech or goodies found in sports cars. There is a navigation system, start with a button, the cabin is surrounded by hard plastic and the trunk is small. At the same time, it might be a little refreshing that Mazda kept the Miata’s interior so simple at a time when entry-level compact cars can already have fancy navigation and backup cameras.
