‘I feel safer now with my new alarm’ Emma Franklin was among residents who opened their doors when a team of Red Cross volunteers and local firefighters offered to install smoke alarms for free. He knows firsthand the importance of home fire safety because he was involved in a fire decades ago.

“I’m very happy about it — I’m really grateful,” Franklin said. “After you’re in one of these fires and all your belongings are burned and dragged down the road, take it seriously. Now I feel safe with my new alarm.”

“It’s just a lot of information” Each year, the month-long Sound the Alarm campaign mobilizes thousands of people to give back to their communities. Red Cross volunteer Terry Unter is among those who have returned year after year.

“It’s not just a meaningful thing for what we do for the community, it’s personally meaningful,” he said. “I’ve done a lot of these events and every time the new volunteers love it and almost always come back. It’s very, very satisfying.”
