The Mazda CX-5 is better than ever after receiving a mid-life update in 2022, and the Japanese mid-size SUV needs every opportunity if it is to compete with the best in the tough mid-size SUV market. Fortunately, the car has retained (and improved) the USP of being a desirable SUV for enthusiastic drivers. It handles better than ever, but most importantly comfort and refinement are on a different level compared to previous models.

Combined with a highly efficient diesel or petrol engine that responds, along with a premium interior and a versatile equipment package, it’s easy to see why this is one of Mazda’s best sellers. In fact, the slightly flashy design doesn’t really lift the game, and some competitors still beat it for technology and performance. But as a comfortable and agile family SUV, it’s an excellent package.

The Mazda CX-5 is a mid-size SUV designed for drivers who want a car that’s fun to drive, rather than a daily commuter. It competes in the highly competitive family SUV market with sharp handling as its main selling point, although the CX-5 has more to offer.

Fun to drive, the Mazda CX-5 offers good performance and boot space, thanks to its larger than average size. The engine size also offers good economy to go with responsive performance.

A glaring flaw throughout the CX-5’s life has been the lack of plug-in hybrid or even mild hybrid technology, but that changed in 2023 when the 24V Mazda M Hybrid mild-hybrid system was added to the mid-size SUV, along with . With cylinder retention – the result of both updates is a net CO2 reduction of 9g/km for the petrol CX-5.

The engine range includes two petrol engines and one diesel engine. The petrol engine is a 2.0 e-Skyactiv G engine with 163bhp, available with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The 191-horsepower 2.5-liter e-Skyactiv G petrol powers the all-wheel drive and is exclusively offered with an automatic transmission.

The 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D diesel in the 148 PS model is no longer available, while the 181 PS model has the option of front- or all-wheel drive and, again, either gearbox.

In 2023, Mazda simplified the CX-5 trim level, reducing it to mid-range, Nugget, Exclusive, Homura and then the top-of-the-line Takumi. Prices for the Mazda CX-5 start from around £31,000, but while that’s higher than some rivals, the CX-5 is well equipped. Sat-nav is standard across the range, as well as glass protection, automatic lights and wipers, LED headlights, climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and front and rear sensors.

As mentioned, the CX-5 has a long list of better competitors. Almost every major brand has a car in the compact SUV class, and models like the Peugeot 3008, Skoda Karoq and SEAT Ateca are tough competitors. The CX-5’s size and price mean it’s also up against the Honda CR-V, Volkswagen Tiguan and Nissan X-Trail, although unlike those cars, the CX-5 doesn’t have seven seats.

Elsewhere, the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Kuga both offer serious challenges to the CX-5, and then there are reliable options like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson, with advanced warranties designed to add reliability. The Citroen C5 Aircross and Vauxhall Grandland are also in the mix, but do not disturb the class leaders. Most of these cars also come with the option of plug-in hybrid power, although diesel options are limited today.

Mazda CX-5 facelift is still a good SUV. Changes to the chassis have made it more comfortable to live on a daily basis, the customization has added some appeal and, when considered alongside its competitors, it seems reasonable for the size of the packages offered. Our only complaint is the engine’s lack of torque, which can affect performance, but that gives you an excuse to use Mazda’s excellent manual transmission.

The CX-5 is one of Mazda’s best-selling cars in the UK. It accounts for about 25 percent of the company’s total volume and has played a major role in increasing the brand’s sales by about 14 percent between 2020 and 2021, during the post-Covid make-or-break period. However, the existing market is incredibly crowded, so this updated CX-5 offers tweaks and changes to make it more competitive.

For starters, the cabin is a comfortable place to be. The interior is very well done and the materials feel sturdy and premium. It certainly doesn’t feel cheap, but more on that later.

Mazda Cx 5 Review, Pricing, And Specs

Mazda engineers have dedicated time to making the CX-5 a better ride. There are new dampers, slightly softer springs and revised seats that offer a bit more support – and for the most part, we’d say Mazda’s efforts have paid off. It gives the car a good road ride, and the variable suspension even filters out more road noise.

However, there is new comfort in the CX-5, as lighter springs mean more body roll through corners.

The engine leaves a little to be desired. Our test car was equipped with Mazda’s Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter engine with naturally aspirated 163 horsepower, which is not enough to match the CX-5’s performance.

When it comes to speed and navigation, it’s good. It is quiet enough, smooth and reasonably economical considering the lack of turbo. We found fuel economy of around 40mpg on the trip computer.
