Mazda Cars Coming To India – Hey everybody! I am writing this review on a 2017 Mazda 6 that I purchased in November 2020. The car had 41,000 miles when I owned it and currently has 74,000 miles on it. So I covered 33,000 miles (53,000 km) in 21 months.

I came to the United States in August 2019 to start my PhD at the University of Florida. Due to poor transport links, I started looking for a car somewhere in early 2020, but it was delayed due to Covid. During the lockout, I browsed every available used car within my budget. After seeing some Mazda 6 reviews and reading how these are set up to drive, I had my heart set on this sedan. It was like I had no other car but a red Mazda 6.

So I kept moving until I found this red Mazda 6 with 41,000 miles in excellent condition for only $16,000. That’s right, USD 16,000, just ~12 lakhs for this well-maintained grand sedan. After the Covid-1 wave, when car sales were like stealing in the US. (Today when I see the prices of the same models, I am lucky, the same cars I saw back then for $15,000 are worth over $20,000 even if they are 2 years old!!!).

So far I’ve driven mostly in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Louisiana. Driving a car with good handling is a pleasure. I haven’t spent much time beyond the usual oil/filter and front brake/disc changes.

It has a Sport mode that makes driving more interesting, but consumes 2-3% more fuel. You will also see an electronic parking brake. The infotainment controller looks and works like BMW’s IDrive.

Integrated navigation displays useful information. On long trips, I attach my phone for additional navigation and use this built-in navigation as an extra help.

Overall it was a good experience with this car and I hope Mazda comes to India soon. I’m sure their range of SUVs like the CX-30, CX-5, CX-50 will win here if the price is right. It is the most powerful Mazda road car ever produced. The new Mazda CX-60 PHEV is a full-size five-seat plug-in hybrid SUV.

Underneath these good-looking treats is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Skyactiv-G gasoline engine, along with a 100 kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh battery. There’s an eight-speed automatic that does without a torque converter, and the revs are respectable for something that weighs a few tons.

Other powertrains are on the way: a straight-six unit, one of which is a 3.0-liter ‘e-Skyactiv-X’ that runs on natural gas, the other a 3.3-liter diesel six that’s said to weigh as much as four boilers. The Mazda CX-5 will make its Indian debut soon, but if the Japanese automaker is serious about the Indian market, it needs to produce the cars locally and not go the CBU route. Setting up a factory takes time, but a company can follow a top-down approach to building brand awareness. MX-5 can be delivered as a CBU and mass market cars can be delivered later. The Mazda CX-5 didn’t appear to have a badge, it was removed and covered. This clearly shows that the company takes Indians seriously.
