Like many Japanese automakers, Mazda began producing products other than motor vehicles. The company started as Toyo Cork Co., Ltd. and was founded on January 30, 1920 in Hiroshima, Japan. It was later renamed Toyo Kogiyo Co., Ltd. Hiroshima Savings Bank and other business leaders in Hiroshima.
In the early 1930s, Toyo Kogyo moved the automobile industry from production to automobiles with the Mazda-Go self-driving car. During World War II, the company produced weapons for the Japanese army.

The third generation Mazda RX-7 is one of the most popular and revered sports cars of all time. It was extremely futuristic when it was first released in 1992, and its design still holds up today.
Compared to the boxy second-generation RX-7, the FD has smoother body lines. The sleek design of the new RX-7 FD is largely the work of chief designer Yoichi Sato and Taiwanese automaker Wu Huang Chin, who worked on the MX-5 Miata.
Alongside the car’s updated design, Mazda has also introduced a new 1.3-liter twin-turbocharged sequential twin-scroll engine. The new 13B-REW engine produced 252 hp (188 kW) when the car was launched, but the RX-7’s output was 276 hp (206 kW).

The first generation MX-5 debuted on February 10, 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show. It was inspired by post-war British sports cars such as the MG B and the Triumph Spitfire.

Mazda kept the MX-5’s body as small and light as possible, not only to produce excellent handling characteristics, but also to allow the car to meet Japanese compact car regulations. This means the MX-5 weighs around 960 kg (2,120 lb) and has a wheelbase of just 2,265 mm (89.2 in).
The lightweight body was mated to a 1.6-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine rated at 115 hp (86 kW), followed by a 1.8-liter engine rated at 129 hp (96 kW).

The Cosmo debuted as an original car at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1964. Between 1965 and 1966, Mazda produced 20 Cosmos as pre-sales for the test drive and 60 for dealership testing.
Full Cosmo production began in May 1967 and continued until 1972. These cars were built at a rate of approximately one per day, for a total of 176.
The Mazda Cosmo Series I was powered by a 982 cc two-stroke 0810 engine producing approximately 110 horsepower (the model was known as the 110S for the export market). It uses a Hitachi four-barrel carburetor and a slightly odd ignition design: two spark plugs per chamber with two distributors. Mazda has paired the rotary engine with a four-speed manual transmission.
In 1968, the second series of Mazda Cosmo was introduced with a more powerful 128 hp (95 kW) engine. It also has brakes, 15-inch wheels, and an updated 5-speed manual transmission. Compared to the Series I, the new car has a top speed of 193 km/h (120 mph) and a quarter-mile time of 15.8 seconds (Series I 185 km/h, 16.4 seconds for a quarter of a mile).

Part of the Cosmos’ success in Japan is because rotary engines give Japanese buyers a financial advantage when it comes to paying annual road tax. Buyers can get a more powerful engine for more than a liter without paying the tax.
The first generation RX-2 was an important car for Mazda. It was the first time a rotary-engined car had gone mainstream, and it was sold as both a sedan and a four-door hatchback.
The RX-2 is essentially Capella’s optional rotary engine package. In Japan the car was known as the Capella Rotary, and for the export market it was designated the RX-2. Like the Cosmo, the RX-2 benefits from its lower road tax bracket.
Mazda equipped the RX-2 with a 1,146 cc Wankel rotary engine producing around 130 horsepower (97 kW). The rotary engine is mated to either a 4/5-speed manual transmission or a 3-speed automatic transmission.
