A lot less stuff needs to be in the hot zone, mainly because we need that thing to function properly when the power goes out. This means that the only power we can rely on is the 12V input. We need some sort of isolated power supply from 9-12V to 9V for signaling. If we want to do this, we might as well have an op amp input for the red wire so we can have high z (safer).
In the safe area we have pins for the power input (9v-12v) as well as pins for three outputs and one input that is connected to the opto-isolators.
