Our three oldest sons (ages 27, 24 and 23) are no longer at home, but they still visit often. I thought it would be a good idea to approach my sons and ask their ideas on this project. So I wrote to my sons and asked them what they wanted to do in their room.
After spending a lot of time googling the word “instagrammy”, I came back to the site. According to my son Michael, Instagrammy means “no too much white, no color, no furniture and clutter.” Therefore, I decided to add some color to the room with color and not to put too much white. I’m still ready to go through the broken furniture and find a place to hide all the “stuff”. But I enjoy the challenge.
This bedroom in our house is our son’s old bedroom and has been used as storage and a guest room for the past two years. This picture shows how bad it is. Old pictures and rugs are kept here for safekeeping and there is little room to sleep. To be fair, this photo was taken after cleaning.
When most people choose paint, they go to the paint store, take the paint home, stick it on the wall, and then go back to the paint store for samples. Next, you want to paint the walls and decide what color you want.

I don’t know what color I want to try because my favorite color is white, which is a limited color for my boys. Instead of going to the paint store, I went online and searched for Behr 2019 color trends. I used Behr Paint Your Place® to upload some photos of my bedroom and then saw different colors on my walls. It’s very easy and I found two things that I really like. BEHR’s 2019 Colors of the Year are Blueprint S470-5 and Cotton GreyHDC-NT-20.
These are the two colors I chose. It’s easy to try out different colors on Ber’s site.
I decided to make the focal point of the room by painting it cotton gray and painting the window grille with Blueprint. I always wanted to create a sitting area under my window and I like how it turned out.
We purchased Behr Marquee® interior paint from Home Depot and prepared to decorate the room. The hardest part is clearing the room. There was a lot of “stuff” left in the room and he spent time sorting through old school doorknobs and trash cans. The preparation was easy as all we had to do was plug a few holes. It took several hours to paint the entire room.

I have a white, broken and worn table that I ignored my son’s request and put in the room. I collected all the household items, except for the duvet cover.
We take the minimum with us so that we have enough space for the children to be comfortable when they get home.
As a finishing touch, I added one of my paintings to the wall. I thought about repainting it, but it turned out great!
You may be surprised how the children feel about the finished room. I sent them a letter.
