“Jeep Patriot CVT. I changed the transmission oil in my 2008 Jeep Patriot 10,000 miles ago and it runs great. My CVT was making noise and after an oil change it went off. Since the original CVT oil was never changed, it burned badly. I checked the CVT oil again and the Valvoline CVT oil still looks fresh. ~loop

I changed the transmission fluid in my vehicle with Valvoline MaxLife™ Full Synthetic ATF. All previous modifications used standard transmission fluid. Does it cause problems?

No. Switching to synthetic transmission fluid after using a conventional product is not a problem. 100 percent synthetic and conventional oils are suitable.

Yes. Valvoline makes several synthetic automatic transmissions. MaxLife® ATF, ATF+4, Hybrid, Extended Protection and DEXRON® VI are synthetic transmission fluids.

CVTs, short for continuously variable transmission, are becoming more common in newer and smaller cars. One of the main advantages of a CVT transmission is its ability to continuously change gear ratios. This means that regardless of engine speed, your vehicle will always operate at maximum efficiency. This means much better fuel consumption, especially in urban environments.

How Much Does It Cost To Replace Transmission Fluid?

I previously wrote an article comparing the pros and cons of driving a CVT transmission. If you are interested, you can read it here. Perhaps the biggest drawback we found was the cost of replacing the CVT. CVT units do not have a typical automatic transmission lifespan, and when they fail, they need to be replaced 9 out of 10 times. This is because the parts are very expensive, can be difficult if not impossible to find, and are usually damaged so badly that they are not even worth restoring.

The reason I mentioned this is to emphasize the importance of regular maintenance, ie. check and change the CVT oil, if you have or had a CVT. CVT fluid wears over time and needs to be changed much sooner than manual or automatic transmission oil. The CVT fluid must be in an acceptable condition to provide adequate protection against metal-to-metal contact and ensure proper friction properties. When the CVT fluid fails, a drop in performance and accelerated wear can begin.

Most car manufacturers recommend changing the CVT transmission fluid every 50,000-90,000km, and a quick look at your service book will confirm the specific intervals specified by your manufacturer. Personally, changing the fluid a little earlier than recommended is smart and helps ensure smooth operation and longer transmission life. If you plan to drive your vehicle for long periods of time, it is recommended that you schedule regular CVT fluid changes.

Some vehicles are used in what can be defined as “severe operating conditions”. In such cases, the CVT fluid should be checked regularly and may need to be replaced at half the interval recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Regular use under the conditions shown below is considered heavy use.

CVT fluid is subject to high temperatures and shear forces throughout its service life. Over time, viscosity decreases, friction properties decrease and deposits may form. The new CVT transmission fluid lubricates, cools and cleans the internal components of the transmission. By changing the CVT fluid you can

The best fluid to use is a fully synthetic CVT fluid, which provides optimized steel-to-steel friction, torque transfer, and longevity of modern automatic transmission components over their normal service life. At Start My Car, we recommend the Petronas Tutela Multi CVT 700.

*I believe there is another way (quick and lazy) as the oil can be pumped out through the filler screw if the pipe is stiff enough. I have not tried this method. It’s lazy because you don’t check or clean the magnets and you can’t tell the condition of the transmission other than the oil.

Here’s how I changed it (not necessarily 100% “by the book”, just using common sense and a bit of googling).

When & Why Replace Your Cvt Oil

Toyota did not tell me how much oil is needed for a proper fill. Basically they told me to put in as much as came out. To determine the correct volume, I poured the old oil into an empty container and weighed it. I then drained the old oil and compared the weight (in the same container +100g in case of leakage) with the new oil. In total, I had about 2.8 kg of oil in the pan (without the weight of the 275 g container) (depending on the temperature and the pour, about 3.2-3.5 liters). It turns out that the oil should be right under the filler hole I used.

It’s not a true drain plug as only about 200-300ml comes out. When the liquid stops draining, use the same 6mm hex socket in the hole where the pan cap was and carefully unscrew the plastic tube. This time around 1-1.5 liters of liquid will come out.

When you remove the plastic tube, the oil level will be just below the seal line. If the car is lifted from the front, the fluid stays above the seal line on the far edge of the pan (about 200-300 ml) (due to the angle of the car). Jacking and leveling the rear of the vehicle can prevent leaks. I found that out the hard way.

After draining the oil through the pan cap, replace the cap and remove the 10mm bolts holding the pan in place. You will find that the pan is “stuck” and will require gentle force to remove. Keep an eye on the oil, as there is about 1 liter of oil left in the pan!

The screw torque is very small (8-10 Nm), I don’t have the exact numbers, but it shouldn’t be much different from other Toyota automatic transmissions (hence the 8-10 Nm figure). Must be done fairly. Do not tighten as the required torque is almost hand tight! I tightened it in several passes (to spread the seal evenly). The best way to start with all the screws holding the pan in place is to loosen all the screws until there is play (the pan can be lifted) and tighten them evenly across and with little torque.

The filler hole (pictured center, flat black oval cap) is located where the buffer would be on a normal car, blocked by a cap held in place by a 10mm screw:
