This is a very easy task for anyone who knows their way around a toolbox. So if you are an experienced DIYer, don’t worry. Before you know it, you’ll be drinking a beer with your friends or fishing on the lake.

Of course, you also need a good quality golf cart battery. In this case we use the Trojan T875 golf cart battery. Trojan has been manufacturing golf carts for decades, so they know what they’re doing. The products they make are undoubtedly some of the best in the industry.

We are replacing the batteries in this truck because they are a little over three years old and it seems like one battery is newer than the rest. This creates a mixed bunch of stacks and brands. A battery does not have a label, so we cannot even determine the Ah value. But it shows signs of ballooning and when we charge it, it doesn’t work very well.

All new golf cart battery chargers are charged via the on-board computer, so they know how much power to connect to the battery bank and for how long. This golf cart now has a Lester Electrical 48 volt 13 amp links series golf cart that plugs into the rear cargo area. Right now, Battery Pete is offering a sale on this charger for $288 – Free Shipping!!! Learn more about golf cart chargers.

Stay tuned to the Battery Pete Blog as we write another article about this custom club car golf cart while changing chargers. The current series of Lester Links is simply not the best brand to use as an onboard charger. It takes up 25% of the luggage space under the back seat. We will install the new 912-4800 48 volt 13 amp Delta Q QuiQ golf kart battery charger that works best for on board. We drive it out of sight and recover our much needed cargo space.

Even the Battery Pete team takes pictures in front of such a project. It’s so easy to forget where “that thread” goes, especially if you’re distracted when you start this task. Everyone on this planet is walking around with a camera in hand these days – use it! You’ll thank yourself later when you need to refer to something during installation.

Disconnect each battery cable, clean and inspect it as you remove it to make sure it is still in good condition. Check for corrosion or breaks in the cables that could cause problems with the car’s performance. If you need to replace them, see our section on your golf kart battery cables. We offer cables individually or as complete sets (OE Standard or High Performance). If possible, lay them as they were and attach to the top of the corresponding deck. This makes it easy to know what goes where during installation.

Then you use your handy battery strap and remove the batteries. As you pull, it’s a good idea to sit in the same direction they were in the golf cart so you can see at a glance when you grab the new one to install it properly. Golf cart batteries are heavy, so the less you have to handle them, the better. You may need to replace the golf cart battery holders as they tend to rot from years of leaking battery acid.

Once all the batteries are removed, push the cart outside to a place where you have access to a water hose. Spray the entire battery compartment and remove the long-handled scrub brush to remove any corrosion or debris from the frame rails. Now take a five minute break while it dries. We use air pressure in the shop to blow dry the area to speed up the process.

Once dry, apply a type of corrosion block or preventive. The best on the market for any alloy is precisely called ‘Corrosion Block’. It comes in a narrow spray bottle with a blue, silver and white colored tail. Once you have properly installed the frame rails that come into contact with the golf cart decks, you are ready to install the new deck.

Insert the new golf cart batteries into their respective slots or sides. Connect all jumper wires (battery cables) that connect all batteries to create a 48 volt control system. Now check all the functionality of your car (forward, reverse, lights, stereo, etc…) to make sure everything is working properly. After a quick tour of the area you should feel the power of the new batteries and see the lights bright. Almost done…

If everything is working properly, you’ll want to apply a slightly different type of corrosion prevention to all terminal connections. We use Corrosion Preventive in our shop, but if it is not available in your area, a Quick product will work just as well. Fast preventive cable corrosion. It also comes in a spray can, so there’s no messy brush or mess to apply; just point and spray. It’s sprayed white so you can see the area covered, but dries clear. You are done! How about a self-powered neighborhood cruiser that doubles as a self-charging mobile battery bank? We build that here!

If you live in South Florida, tropical storms and power outages are the norm. Sure, you can have a big generator and worry about its power, or you can opt for more creative ways to make it until the power comes back. I love tinkering and solar energy, so this project was an amalgamation of many different interests. Stuff reuse, solar power, DIY, off-grid and emergency preparedness rolled into one package I can enjoy all year round.

People sometimes forget that the humble golf cart lends itself well to solar charging and can also serve as a great battery bank when the power goes out. Sure, you can spend thousands of dollars jumping on a golf cart, but you can have fun for a lot less and still build something cool.

Golf carts seem to have become a “thing” in neighborhoods across the country. They used to be limited to large estates and golf courses, but that is no longer the case. People equip them with big tires, sound systems, fast engines, etc. This has obviously driven up prices for nicer carts, but you can still find cheap ugly ducklings if you look hard.

The big killer for golf carts is bad decking. Batteries are expensive and the need to replace a backpack every few years results in an older cart being put out to pasture and neglected. I picked up the red cart in the photo (pre-customized) for $250, no batteries. That even includes delivery. You can find these offers.

Which brand of goods to buy? In my opinion, when buying an old car, you should not go for anything other than a club car. For what? Club Car has long used an aluminum chassis. Aluminum frames last longer and Club Car builds a great quality product. I own a 1973 and 1985 Club Car. Both frames hold up well.
