The Sacrament of Holy Orders in the Catholic Church includes three orders: Bishops, priests and deacons, in descending order, together with priests. In the phrase “consecration”, the word “holy” means “set apart for a holy purpose”. The word “order” means an established civil institution or hierarchical organization, and to be ordained means to be legally incorporated into an order.
