Every traveler has their own expectations, comfort level and budget. So let’s start by considering the things you should consider before you start looking at companies.
We’ll come right out and say it: Hiring a caravan in New Zealand isn’t cheap. Even if you go with the cheapest company out there, you’ll still be paying a lot.
However, traveling in an RV is a great way to save money while traveling because you can cook your own meals (cheaper than eating out!) and you can get free campsites (cheaper than staying in a hotel!).

Firstly, the time of year can greatly affect the price. If you travel during the peak summer season (called December – March), expect to pay higher prices. Both the caravan we built ourselves and the one we rented in New Zealand failed to fly in it. We did well in both, but agreed that it would be better if we could stop.

If you have a large budget to work with and hope for a good level of comfort, you may be attracted to larger caravans. It looks damn luxurious! But before you pull the trigger, think about how you drive such a truck.
The roads in New Zealand (especially in the South Island) can be narrow and windy. For the most part, we enjoy driving our truck, but there are a few times we’re surprisingly glad we’re not driving one of the larger RVs.
If you are used to driving on the left side of the road or have experience with trucks, one of the larger brands may be fine.

However, if you are a careful driver and driving on the side of the road bothers you, then perhaps a smaller vehicle will make the transition easier.
On that note, make sure you have good travel insurance for rental cars if you mix up left and right and have an accident. Caravan insurance is usually not covered by standard travel insurance or credit card insurance, so we recommend doing some research to find out if you need extra cover.
