This engine is powerful, but it gave us a few gripes. On a cold start, it is very rough, like a diesel engine. In terms of speed, it is rather sluggish when asked to accelerate significantly. More torque on the lower ranges takes care of sluggishness without giving up too much fuel for economy. Still, the engine is capable, and we never found ourselves in danger from a lack of power.
Our all-wheel drive test car responded deftly to the driver’s commands. It handles well, corners fast, doesn’t rock in corners, handles these twisty roads, and handles big puddles and sheds well in a rainy year.

That’s not all for a comfortable, well-equipped utility vehicle. There are no changes for the 2015 Mazda CX-5. The updated CX-5 will go on sale in 2015 as a 2016 model.
The 2015 Mazda CX-5 is a two-row crossover available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations. It is the first vehicle to feature Mazda’s full suite of Skyactiv technologies, which include a high-compression engine, improved transmission and a lighter, stronger chassis.

Like all Mazda vehicles, the 2015 CX-5 has excellent driving dynamics, good handling and balance, and sporty handling that makes driving on winding roads a pleasure. The larger 2.5-liter I-4 also accelerates well, giving this crossover enough power to pass and merge on the highway. The CX-5’s responsive automatic transmission is also a strong point, shifting gears quickly and seamlessly. Despite its dynamic characteristics, the CX-5’s ride is not sacrificed to handling, remaining comfortable over rough pavement.
The seats are suitable for four passengers and provide good support for long journeys and spirited driving on winding roads. While build quality is excellent, the interior design of the 2015 CX-5 is conservative and bland, especially with an all-black interior as the only option. Although it has added many technology features since its introduction in 2012 as a 2013 model, the crossover’s navigation remains a weak point, and its small 5.8-inch touchscreen looks dated compared to competitors. Cargo hauling, on the other hand, is a strong point, with the 40/20/40 split-folding seatbacks increasing volume to 64.8 cubic feet.
The NHTSA gave the 2015 Mazda CX-5 an overall safety rating of five stars out of five. In IIHS evaluations, the 2014 model earned Good scores in all test categories and earned a Top Safety Pick+ award (Good is the highest rating).
