The competition between the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4 is as fierce as any, both of which helped drive the compact crossover market in the late 1990s. But in recent years, the CR-V has had the upper hand, beating the RAV4 in comparison tests, our compact crossover ratings – and winning our SUV trophy of the Year (twice!). For 2023, the plot changes when Honda reveals the new sixth generation CR-V. But the current fifth-generation RAV4, which goes on sale in 2019, is anything but. Wondering which one will fit into the parking lot easier? The 2023 CR-V and RAV4 are similar in size, with the CR-V being a few inches longer but standing shorter than the RAV4. These values vary by trim and equipment.
Rav4 Vs 2018/2019 Cr V
In its new version the CR-V (apparently) gets bigger inside. In addition to second-row legroom, cargo space has increased and is now equal between the CR-V and CR-V Hybrid; Earlier hybrids offered less cargo space for their batteries. Its interior dimensions are larger than the RAV4.
In the 2023 CR-V, the standard engine is still a 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4 that produces 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque. Those figures are consistent with the outgoing model, but Honda says they’ve revised the engine for better response and less noise. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive are standard; All-wheel drive is available. Expect a 0-60 mph time of around 8.0 seconds, and fuel economy of 27/32 mpg city/highway with AWD.
The 2023 RAV4’s base engine is a 2.5-liter I-4 that produces 203 hp and 184 lb-ft, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and either FWD or AWD. Although it is larger and more powerful than the CR-V’s engine, it sends the RAV4 to 60 mph in 8.0 seconds and achieves 25/32 mpg with AWD.
Both the CR-V and RAV4 are available as hybrids. The 2023 CR-V Hybrid, like previous versions, uses a fixed setup around a 2.0-liter I-4 paired with two electric motors. The combined output is 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque, all sent to the front or four wheels with available AWD. Expect a 0-60 mph time of 7.5 seconds, and fuel economy around 40/35 mpg (city/highway).
Honda Cr V Hybrid: 40 Mpg Crossover Priced To Make Hybrid Mainstream
The 2023 RAV4 Hybrid uses the I-4 engine and two electric motors, but in a different configuration. It has a large capacity of 2.5 liters with four cylinders, to which an electric motor is connected. Another motor turns the rear wheels, giving the RAV4 Hybrid AWD no mechanical connection between the front and rear axles. Our test team recorded a 0-60 mph time of 7.1 seconds from the RAV4 Hybrid. EPA-rated fuel economy is 41/38 mpg (city/highway).
In addition, the RAV4 is available as a plug-in hybrid. That model, the RAV4 Prime, has a larger battery that pushes total power up to 302 hp – dropping the 0-60 mph time to 5.5 seconds. More relevant is the 42 kilometers of all-electric range. In hybrid drive, it achieves 94 mpg-e combined. A CR-V plug-in hybrid isn’t available—at least, not yet.
The Honda Sensing CR-V safety suite and the RAV4’s Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) bring plenty of active safety and driver assistance technology to either SUV. Each is equipped with adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking. In the 2023 CR-V, the system’s sensors are said to be upgraded to respond more naturally. At the same time, the 2023 RAV4 automatic braking system has been developed to avoid accidents when turning on highways. All 2023 CR-Vs have hill descent control and a snow drive mode, available only on certain RAV4 trims.
Although the 2023 CR-V will still be crash-tested, Honda probably won’t let you lose the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and with the five-star NHTSA points the previous model has achieved in consecutive years, to distinct from the current SUV. Comes with front and side airbags. In its latest round of crash tests, the RAV4 earned an IIHS Top Safety designation and a five-star NHTSA rating.

For 2023, the RAV4 has been updated to have an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen as standard, or a 10.5-inch unit on top models, both using Toyota’s latest software brought to – first entry on the Tundra build. Meanwhile, the 2023 CR-V’s base touchscreen measures 7.0 inches, and expands to 9.0 inches on higher trims. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are common among them, but only the RAV4 has Bluetooth connectivity for two devices. Both have a 7.0-inch digital gauge display cluster, but the RAV4 offers a 12.3-inch all-digital gauge cluster.
The 2023 CR-V has two USB ports as standard and the RAV4 has three. Depending on the trim, two USB charging ports will be added to the second row, along with a front row charger. Both SUVs are offered with premium sound systems: a JBL setup with 11 speakers in the RAV4, and a Bose series with 12 speakers in the CR-V.
Pricing for the 2023 CR-V hasn’t been announced, but you can expect the base price to rise slightly (if it’s anything like the new Civic launched last year, the bump being small). This is because the previous LX trim has been discontinued, leaving the EX as an entry-level CR-V successor. Expect the 2023 CR-V to start at just under $30,000, while the Hybrid model will cost around $3,000.
Thanks to the entry-level LE trim priced at around $28,000, the RAV4’s starting price can be lower than the CR-V’s. Similarly, the RAV4 Hybrid starts in LE trim, just under $31,000. At the top end of the range, the RAV4 Prime XSE costs nearly $45,000.

We’ll revisit that price difference later in the pricing section, but for now let’s go ahead and get into the meat and potatoes of this comparison!
So from the outside, you can tell right away that both look aggressive but not in an offensive way.
