Best Cheap Phone 2023: Five Smartphones For Under $500

If you know how to pick your priorities, you can get a great device for less than $500 these days.

Some of us think of gadgets as an “eat to live” approach rather than a “live to eat” approach. They are tools to help you get things done, not something you want to spend a lot of time or money on. If you are a witness and you are not judging from a certified device here, you may want to consider more valuable methods. Spend $1,000 more than the phone.

Budget phones come to the rescue. These devices cost $500 or less and are more capable than ever. You don’t get all the bells and whistles, but you do save some money on, I don’t know, actual bells and whistles. It’s your world.

At least several years of OS updates and preferably three years of security updates. There’s no point in buying a cheap phone if you need to replace it after a few years because it hasn’t stopped getting security patches.

If you look at it nearly two thousand times a day, your phone screen is something that should not be compromised. OLED has more contrast and color compared to LCD, and today’s large phone screens require at least 1080p resolution. Faster refresh rates like 90Hz and even 120Hz are becoming commonplace on budget phone screens, but for my money, standard flat-slide LCD refresh rates aren’t nearly as nice as OLED.

If you want to connect from your phone for a while, get enough space to fit all the system files, photos and videos you’ve accumulated over the years. Ideally, you’ll get at least 128GB of storage, but I’m looking for at least 64GB, expandable via MicroSD card.

In the sub-$500 range, phone upgrades like cameras and optical image stabilization are rare, but you can expect good basic performance in good lighting from any modern smartphone. Low light is more difficult. Phones in this class should offer a night mode for still subjects in very dim light. No bonus points for adding a macro lens and an extra depth camera to take away from the rear camera array; those 2 and 5 megapixel sensors don’t help.

Most of our options are around $400 or $500, but there are some great options for $300 and under. You get a bright, high-resolution OLED screen or a battery that lasts for days. If you can fit the one or two features that matter most to you and are willing to compromise elsewhere, you can get a phone that meets your needs for half the price of a flagship.

The Cheap Smartphones Fighting For The Developing World’s Internet

What compromises can you expect from a budget phone? Some of the following are combined. slower processor, less storage and more cameras than flagship phones. Many have low-resolution displays, and many lack official NFC chip ratings for water resistance, wireless charging, and contactless payments.

If Apple’s excellent track record of pushing iOS updates to older devices is anything to go by, the 2022 iPhone SE will last more than five years. But its tiny 4.7-inch screen feels cramped now and may be difficult to use five years from now, while apps and websites continue to be designed for larger screens. Read our review.

Display: 4.7-inch, 1334p LCD / Processor: A15 Bionic Camera: 12-megapixel f/1.8 OIS, 7-megapixel selfie / Charging: 20W wired, 7.5W wireless / Weather resistance: IP67

IPhone SE 128GB is the best value of all time in the smartphone market. $479, given that it will continue to receive iOS updates for five or even six or seven years.

But before you buy the SE, which is expected to hit most shores in the next decade, without buying a new phone; make sure you can live with its extremely small, dated 4.7-inch screen. It’s about the same size as the iPhone 6, and in an age where apps and web pages are designed for larger screens, it’s starting to feel cramped. The SE’s large bezels also make the device slimmer, but small-screen usability will be a bigger factor in the coming years.

This is the biggest knock against SE. Otherwise, it’s a great mid-range device. Its A15 processor is the same as the iPhone 13 Pro Max, so it performs very well. There’s IP67 waterproofing and wireless charging, which is common for this price range, and while it uses an older 12MP camera, it takes very nice photos and high-quality video. The camera does not have a night mode, which is an interesting omission. many other mid-range phones offer some sort of low-light mode, and the phone’s processor is certainly up to the task. apple apple

This generation SE offers 5G connectivity. just the low and mid range, ok. You won’t get the fast 5G millimeter wave you’ll find in NFL stadiums, but it’s nothing to lose sleep over. Battery life has also improved over the previous generation, and unless you’re doing really heavy stuff like gaming and video, it’ll usually last a day.

If you can live with a smaller screen and don’t mind the lack of night mode, we recommend getting the 128GB version. The base model’s 64GB of storage isn’t enough, and you’ll be glad you spent the extra $50 when you’ve used this phone for years.

Affordable Android Phones With Iphone Like Designs

The Pixel 7A has some hard-to-find features for around $500, including wireless charging and an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. It’s not the cheapest phone in its class, but it’s the best phone to go the distance.

Screen: 6.1 inches, 1080p OLED, 90 Hz / Processor: Tensor G2 Camera: 64 megapixels with f/1.89 OIS, 13 megapixels ultrasound, 13 megapixels selfie / Battery: 4,385 mAh 18 W 7 wireless / wireless charging. Weatherproof rating: IP67

What to expect from the mid-range Google Pixel 7A phone? At $499, it’s on the high end of what we’d consider “budget” and slightly more expensive than its closest US competitor, the $449 Samsung Galaxy A54. But with a state-of-the-art camera and state-of-the-art accessories like wireless charging, it’s a step ahead of anything else in the mid-range.

One of the major updates to the 7A is the new 6.1-inch 90Hz screen, which makes animations and scrolling smoother than last year’s 60Hz screen. Using the same Tensor G2 chip as the 7A, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro have 8GB of RAM. This means excellent performance for everyday tasks as well as heavy loads such as games. The 7A is tougher than your average, with an aluminum frame and an IP67 rating for resistance to dust and splashes of water.

Here’s Why Everything On Temu Is So Cheap

Battery life is good enough to get you through the day with moderate use, but add in a long gaming session and you’ll need to top it off before bed. Wireless charging is available, which is very rare in the budget mobile phone class. If you’re used to wireless charging, the 7A is perfect for your daily routine.

The Pixel 7A’s camera is really bright. It is based on a new 64 million pixel camera with functional ultrasound and optical stabilization. That’s not all you’ll get from a flagship camera; there’s no video or telephoto mode, but the A54 is reliable even in low-light conditions that rivals the competition.

You may have noticed that Google’s current flagships are the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, and the 7A seems to be a step behind. First of all, the Series 8 phones use the latest Tensor G3 chips, which offer valuable upgrades like Face Unlock for mobile payments and seven years of software support. The Pixel 7A technically lags behind the 8 series by six months, but lots of small updates make the 8 and 8 Pro feel like a leap forward. The 7A remains the best in its class for now, but if you can afford it, it’s worth seeing what the Pixel 8A has to offer. This will probably be in the summer of 2024.
