I think FOBs were a bit simpler in the RS days? Put a dime/quarter in the slot and 1/4 wrap all ours from 10-15/20 years ago if I remember.

This is exactly what happened to us yesterday. All the guts fell to the ground. We returned it with a new battery but now the vehicle does not recognize the fob. This is one of three reasons:

I’m glad I’m in year four and haven’t had to replace the battery yet. The last fob battery I changed in my 6 year old VW was last year right before I replaced it.

I think this is a really cute little design – I had fun taking it apart. And it makes it easier to clean everything every now and then. It seems to be designed to only snap back together in one direction (providing a bit of a puzzle only the first few times). I think an alternative would be one of those plastic caps that you turn with a coin, although that would probably increase the size of the fob quite a bit. A word of warning though – if my spring tends to come out (as it seems to some), I may be a little less happy. This has never happened to me.

This is an absolutely terrible plan. And it’s not “everyone’s a phobe these days.” Compared to Subie which is crazy, I think I could change a Jeep fob battery in the dark.

Personally, I thought replacing the battery was pretty easy. I just follow the instructions in the user manual. I think my 5 year battery charge is over. I have had 2 packs of replacement batteries in the glove box for several years. My spare fob that I never use still has the original battery.

A low-tech trick to take apart small springy objects. Place the clear plastic bag of the busy tool in the bag. Slide one hand into the bag with whatever tool is needed to open it, and use the other hand to secure the tool on the outside. When all the internal parts, even smaller than the spring, try unjustly to break through the chamber, they can’t go any further…

Our 2015 Toyota Sienna Quad Smart Key Fob fell apart after opening to replace the battery. Two of the large edge braces broke, meaning I had a choice of glue or glue for a temporary fix. Fortunately, this is a known problem and exact replacement outer boxes are cheaply available on the web. $10 and put it back together a few days later and it looks/works like new.
