The Mazda 3 is, to say the least, an ambitious car. But he also has a lot of weight on his shoulders. The result of the automotive industry’s almost century-long history as champion of all men.

Back to the 3 hatchback here, specifically the 2.0 High Plus in hatchback form (Mazda confusingly calls it a “liftback”). The paper specs are uninspiring. A five-door hatch with a good interior, above-average luggage space (351 liters) and a 2.0 naturally aspirated engine and gearbox from the previous generation? For 160 thousand GEL? It’s a tough sell.
It’s a shame, because you’re missing out on a car that could be a class leader, especially if it fits the driver and owner profile Mazda had in mind when developing it. When driving it, it’s also clear that they had a very clear idea of what kind of person would love this car.
There are lots of little details that collectively show that Mazda has put a lot of care and attention into the experience, usually an indicator of a premium product. It starts as soon as you step on it.
First impressions are important and the 3 seems designed to stand out. Our test car came with Mazda’s exclusive new exterior color, a bright shade of deep crimson called Soul Red Crystal Metallic, which matches the 18-inch dark metallic wheels perfectly. The seating position, the feel of the pedals, the action of the shifters – it all feels like they spent a lot of time refining.
On top of that base, Mazda has invested a lot of style into itself. There’s not much to distract from driving and the dashboard will likely be minimal, which pairs well with the material choices and provides a visual motif that matches the exterior. If only the Malaysian variants of the 3-hatch offered more interior color tone options beyond the rather cold and formal black on black.
