Organizers Jim and Kelly Ward, who own Hoosier Loft, said they were “absolutely devastated” by the fire. Ward’s friends said four of their dogs also died in the fire.

NEW ALBANY – When Stephen Price agreed to let one of his tenants take home a large number of pigeons, he had no idea he was getting himself into it.
“He always told me, ‘One day you’re going to inherit this,’” Price said in his backyard at the corner of East Main and Vincennes in New Albany.
Maskalik built about 40 cages for these pigeons, fed them and let them fly in batches. The birds, a cross between a pigeon and a domestic pigeon equipped with a natural GPS and a sense of survival, always return.

Price credits the bird with helping Maskalic, in his 60s, live longer than he otherwise would have. Maskalik, who had heart problems, died about a year ago, Price said.
“I think they actually gave him extra years because it was a calming effect,” Price said of Pigeons. “If you ever come here and sit and watch, it’s like looking at an aquarium or something… so relaxing, so peaceful.”
The cooing sound of pigeons is like a melody. With strangers around, they bowed their heads and sat on the edge. Most of Price’s pigeons are white, sparkling in the night and afternoon sun and visible from lights. Others are white, have black or dark green spots, and have a light blue tint.

Price used popcorn – a favorite of pigeons – to knock them down one weekend. Each bird spread its wings through the gate then quickly changed direction and landed on the top of the cage. They are still there – free, but safe. Price said the birds know when darkness is approaching and the sun is about to set, meaning hunters are hiding. So when he released them at night, they were very close to each other even though they could fly hundreds of miles away.
According to Price, in addition to needing protection from injury, pigeons are also “durable” birds. They need more than just food and clean water.

After Maskalik’s death, Price, who lived a few houses away and owned several properties nearby, took on the role of caretaker. He admitted that he was considering getting rid of the pigeon, but he was too attached to it to deal with it. His praise was never clearer than when he spoke to the pigeons in a monotone voice.

It’s a tactic Price learned along the way as he’s learned almost everything there is to know about pigeon care. He also gets insight from his pigeon friends, who offer advice here and there. And yes, there are plenty of pigeon compatriots. Later this month, Price and his daughter (a longtime bird lover) will attend the National Young Bird Show in Louisville. According to the event’s website, it is one of the largest pigeon shows in the country.
Rick Kilgore, president of the Indiana Pigeon Club and owner of more than 100 pigeons, said it is a popular show competition that attracts people from all over the world.
Kilgore has raised pigeons since he was 6 years old. He enjoys the challenge of husbandry (with hundreds of pigeons) and the friendly competition of a show or contest.

Kilgore said the Indiana Pigeon Club has 40 to 50 members and is still growing. More and more 4-H children are becoming interested, and they are the ones keeping the fun going.
