I’m guessing the dealer is charging less, maybe they use cheap bulk oil that isn’t genuine Toyota oil (if that’s what you’re worried about). What else do stores charge besides the $39.99 price? At low prices, I have no doubt that they are loss leaders and hope to sell you other services.

It says “up to 5 quarts” so it’s probably a bit higher than the 5th generation (6.5 quarts). I get oil/filter changes at my dealership for about $65, which leaves me scrambling around under the truck.
I’d say that’s the cut for me too. Paid £45 for the filter at Mobil1 and Napa. The only “problem” is knowing if they actually used a lot of oil or Toyota oil. However, if it’s artificial, I don’t care too much about it. Just comfort. Having a dealer record is a plus for future resale value.

They use the original Toyota filter, but normal oil and service intervals are 5,000 miles, Toyota does not recommend 10,000 miles for their 0w20 synthetic.
Some windshield wipers (not made in Japan with Toyota OEM fillers) also have crazy sales that convince you to replace the wiper blades. OEMs don’t want to give you new Japanese fillers.
I can’t buy Toyota OEM filters from local dealers. They have a $15 tax. I usually get a 10% discount for Costco members. But I’d rather buy from Amazon or an online Toyota dealer in a small town than lose my breath.

Since I really have to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty, I use Redline 0W20. Whenever the price drops on Amazon (tracked using camelcamelcamel.com) I buy them. I installed a Toyota filter and a new drain plug. Also, I run the engine with red oil (yes, I understand it takes separate oil for cranks and joints, but not 2 separate arms). I’ve been to 2 dealerships for an oil change and it won’t turn the driver on.
I can usually change the oil in 45 minutes. I slide the OEM metal head plate down and run the 2 front wheels with 2x6s to clear it enough to turn it off. Then be careful not to mess it up.
I understand that my link above may not be possible for some people due to shipping costs. Another suggestion is to ask your local dealer for a price match. I have had success by asking various dealerships (not just Toyota). Although they don’t fit often, they are cheap enough to keep the price down.
