Consistently fun to drive and generally affordable, my week behind the wheel of the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Grand Touring has me seriously considering saying goodbye to my beloved BMW 128i. Oops, I’m still thinking about it a little bit. That’s why it’s an attractive option for anyone who’s fit and looking for uncompromising appeal in their rides.

In terms of styling, every angle of the ND-generation MX-5 looks great. It has elegant, classic sports car styling, unique front and rear fenders, and an aggressive, resolute front end. It looks small in the photo and is actually smaller, although wider than one would think. Once again a classic material for sports cars. I think it looks better top down, but it looks great top down too. Its LED headlights are particularly sharp and its 17-inch alloy wheels are among the most attractive available today.

Its small size means it’s tight inside, but more like a tight, well-tailored suit than something too small for the sales rack. At six foot three and still suffering from the burdens of winter, I fit it surprisingly well, with my head under the top of the windshield most of the time and the seat as low and as far back as possible. In the end, I couldn’t recline it to the ideal position and get enough legroom to drive it for more than two hours without feeling drowsy, but it’s still a lot more than you might think. That’s not really an issue when it comes to territory. After my first day of use, I did research aftermarket solutions for this little dilemma.

Otherwise, the interior is very well appointed, with comfortable leather seats, leather stitching on the dash, a small but well-placed seven-inch infotainment screen and very clear analog gauges. The distance between the gear lever and the wheel is so close that I could place the latter a reasonable distance from the hull. Its nine-speaker Bose sound system has excellent sound quality and includes headrest speakers, which makes Bluetooth phone calls a little disorienting at first, while Apple CarPlay connection is quick and easy.

The Miata comes with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic, but has only one engine and powertrain: a rear-mounted 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-four. Since my test car was the Grand Touring version, it was also equipped with a Torsen limited-slip differential. 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque may not seem like much, but it’s more than enough for the car’s 2,341-pound curb weight, propelling it from 0 to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds.

The MX-5’s powerband is really fun and I was surprised by the overall torque feel. There’s more than enough power to get past six on the highway, although I’d prefer a quick downshift or two, especially at revs as high as 7500 rpm. While its wider powerband is fairly linear, it has an above-average amount of pulse in the midrange, not too dissimilar to my own BMW 128i. Just, you know, scaled down.

One of the most immediate surprises after driving the ND Miata is its ride comfort. Its sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein dampers, surrounded by double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, gives it a very supple ride over notoriously rough roads, despite its tiny 205/45 /17 Bridgestone performance tires make me think the opposite. That’s right before you start. The car rides and handles quite sporty without any real issues. It has the typical body and hood flex that most convertibles have, but it never negatively affects its handling.

The steering is by far the best powertrain I’ve experienced, and with good overall chassis stiffness (for a convertible) and the engine behind the front shock towers, it’s very direct and solid. To my surprise, most of the road surface came up to my toes, which, like the curb weight, made me wonder why more cars with modern, non-hydraulic equipment couldn’t do the same thing.

Its brake pedal and gear lever deserve similar praise. The first one is sturdy, easy to adjust but not sticky by any means, and the second one is in the top five for me. Unable to play, reasonably short range, perfect spacing, solid deployment. Gorgeous. As with previous generations of Miata, you get all the vibrations of a transmission drive because the shifter sticks directly out of the transmission, with no cables or connections required.

Even with the traction control off, the craziest thing is the slight shudder in the rear end under hard braking. It reminded me of a similar experience I had while easily preparing for a track on my old Mazda 2. Sometimes I miss cars.

It never gets old, but after about 20 minutes I started to feel the brakes fade a bit, so it was necessary to allow time for them to cool down. The 2023 Mazda MX-5 is a grippy, fun little convertible that you can drive day after day without giving up much if you enjoy the convertible life. Unless you’re as tall as me (or taller), you’ll need two more seats or prefer more cargo space. In this case, you’re getting a great value at $34,710, and it’s filled with endless opportunities; if you’re like me, you’ll find excuses to ride it everywhere.

Top-down wind noise is also good, which helps improve its day-to-day functionality. You can’t expect to hear a whisper on the highway at 70 mph, but I was still able to have an open conversation with a friend while driving down Highway 405 in Southern California. Charging is also good, although it makes a lot of noise at speeds above 120km/h. This is to be expected given that it’s a lightweight soft top.

My only real complaint, trying to find something, is the mechanical noise.
