The Crosstrek sometimes feels more engaging to drive thanks to its manual transmission, but the optional CVT is less impressive. It is more economical though, with mileage figures of 28/33/30 mpg. Although the starting price is higher than the Mazda, the Subaru does not feel it inside. However, both subcompacts are equipped with a decent feature list, and they are almost perfectly matched in terms of cargo space. Still, the Mazda CX-30 seems like a smarter choice, with better overall appeal and an available turbocharged engine if you’re willing to shell out a little extra dough.
The Honda CR-V is one of the most popular mid-size SUVs in the US, so it’s hard for the CX-30 to compete with it. Ten inches of extra length means it offers more cargo capacity—a total of 39.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats—and more comfortable rear passenger seats. However, the new turbocharged four-pot on the Mazda gives it more power than the 190 hp developed by the 1.5L turbo on the CR-V, and the smaller crossover handles much nicer. Technologically, the two are almost neck-and-neck, so what it really comes down to is whether or not you need the extra space. Honda’s starting price is more expensive at $25,350, but you’ll have to pay more than $30,000 to get the CX-30 2.5 Turbo.
