The steering is direct and has just the right amount of liveliness, and while this Grand Touring model may not have the club’s optional Brembo brakes, it will continue to stop without any dramatic rush.

Combine this solid approach to dynamics with an engine that delivers just the right amount of power, and the result is a car that never feels like it’s overpowered or underpowered. Of course, I have to spend a little more time digging into the throttle to get enough power to make a pass, but the engine note is nice at higher revs and gives me more options to use the controller’s six-speed manual.

If other automakers haven’t analyzed Mazda’s six-speed stick, they should. This is the best manual transmission offered in any car today. The clutch has the right weight and clearly communicates the point of bite. The shifter has plenty of travel and engages each gate pleasantly. The throttle is perfectly adjusted. I would never ask for a shifter in a Miata because the gas pedal gives me pixel perfect downshifts every time. And best of all, Mazda never programmed an inch of torque, emissions or otherwise into this car. I hit the clutch and the revs drop immediately. Smooth switching is so easy a Geico caveman could do it.

Mazda Mx 5 Miata Review: Still A Pure Driver’s Car After 32 Years

The 2022 MX-5 gets a bright new off-white paint job, but my tester was dressed in Mazda’s beloved Soul Red, an affordable and generally good-looking $595 option. The Grand Touring doesn’t get the Club’s fancy BBS wheel upgrade, but its standard 17-inch alloys get a good sidewall of Bridgestone Potenza S001 summer tires to help smooth out the ride quality. There is also a new dark red interior pattern, but mine is the traditional black leather. The color of the exterior paint extends into the upper door panels, breaking up the monochrome monotony.

Given that the Miata is a roadster, it’s no surprise that practicality doesn’t ooze from every resource. Door panel storage is limited to where you close it by hand. The removable cup holders are smart, but they’re short, so stability while drinking is constantly in question. Also, putting anything in them when attached to the center console prevents access to the locker between the seats. The pocket under the armrest is big enough for a key, and the tray in front of the lever will fit a wallet or phone. In the back, the 4.6-cubic-foot trunk will hold a few backpacks or a few bags of groceries. There isn’t much space in the trunk, but the devilishly simple soft top doesn’t eat up that space at all.
