Other symptoms not consistent with IBS include rectal bleeding, dark stools, weight loss, loss of appetite, diarrhea or abdominal pain that wakes you up at night, or iron deficiency anemia. “IBS is a complex disease,” she says. “There is much to learn about why the low-FODMAP diet works and how we can make it more effective for our patients.”
