That’s only 10 horsepower, which may be why marketers want to make sense of the extra $6,000 you’ll pay for the Acura. But endurance racing exposes performance gaps.

The MDX comes a long way from the rider. Frankly, acceleration shouldn’t be much different, so SH-AWD might actually do a better job. What’s worth pointing out here is that these two are probably quicker than non-turbo three-row V6 crossovers, especially the Toyota and Nissan.
So Acura is faster. End of story. But in reality, that’s not the case. That’s because your decision to buy a three-row crossover should be based on other factors as well. Design is one of them and there is no doubt that the MDX attended the design process while Honda sat at home taking care of its baby.
However, the interior greatly favors the Honda. The body of the car is longer and longer to provide more space, and the infotainment system is also more modern. On the other hand, if you like red leather and dual exhaust tips, the Acura is for you.

As for the powertrain, although the MDX’s engine is 10 horsepower more powerful than the Pilot’s, it is actually the same 3.5-liter V6 engine as the J35Y series, with only slightly different tuning. It is equipped with the same advanced technological features such as direct fuel injection, Variable Cylinder Timing (VCM), VTEC, etc.
Speaking of transmissions, the 2016 Honda Pilot can be purchased with the same 9-speed automatic transmission as the MDX, supplied by ZF.
The VTM-4 all-wheel drive system in the previous generation Honda Pilot is completely different from the Acura SH-AWD system in the MDX. So the main differences between Pilot and MDX are exterior/interior styling and some minor electronic features. The Pilot also has more interior space than the MDX and costs less than the MDX when equipped similarly.
So, according to some, the Pilot is much more attractive than the MDX (which is objectively true). So why is Honda doing this? Won’t this hurt MDX sales?

The reason is that the potential of the midsize SUV market is so large that Honda cannot miss it. However, looking at the graph above, it is clear that the existing Pilot is losing market while its main competitors are growing and gaining market share. So this forced Honda to try to create a very good driver without risking it threatening the MDX.

Given that it’s been less than a month since the new Pilot began arriving in dealer warehouses, it’s unknown how it will perform in the market or what impact it will have on MDX sales at this time. But I am sure of one thing. The thing is that the new Pilot will be more popular than the previous generation. Are the higher-end models worth the price? This question has confused car buyers for years, especially between cars in the same family that share the same platform and similar hardware, like the Honda Pilot and the upscale Acura MDX. Born from the same parents, these siblings offer three rows of seats, all-wheel drive, and the latest connected car technology. So what makes this three-row crossover SUV different?
The differences are significant. The redesigned 2023 Honda Pilot is longer, wider, can seat up to eight passengers, and comes with the off-road TrailSport trim. The 2023 Acura MDX leans more on the refined utility side with a performance-oriented Type S model with a more refined design, seating for seven with a leather-trimmed interior, and an air suspension that takes full advantage of its impressive handling.
The difference between the base models is more than $13,000, and the difference increases as you go upscale, with a price difference of more than $20,000 between the two models. Here’s whether we think it’s worth it and how the Pilot and MDX perform.
Skip the base Pilot LX and the smaller touchscreen and get the Pilot Sport for at least $40,495. It has heated front seats, power adjustment and tri-zone climate control. But the best value for most features is the EX-L. Priced at $43,295 or $43,595 with second-row captain’s chairs, the EX-L adds leather upholstery, a 9.0-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone compatibility and charging, a nine-speaker audio system, and a power liftgate. That’s about as good as a base Acura MDX for just over $50,000.
The Debate: Honda Pilot Vs. Acura Mdx
If all-wheel drive is a must, you might consider the $49,695 TrailSport edition or the top-of-the-line $53,375 Pilot Elite. Both come with standard AWD. Otherwise, it will cost you $2,100. The TrailSport comes with off-road equipment and a panoramic sunroof. The Elite adds navigation, 20-inch wheels, a removable second-row center seat, 12-speaker Bose audio, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster display, a surround view camera system, and a head-up display. At that point, our eyes shift to MDX.
Priced at $50,745 including destination, the Acura MDX is well-equipped compared to other premium and luxury three-row crossover SUVs. It features 19-inch wheels, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and a panoramic sunroof. However, there is a caveat. The infotainment screen uses a sketchy console touchpad, which could theoretically be safer than using a touchscreen. If you want to enjoy all the digital interfaces modern cars have to offer, test your tolerance for them before buying the MDX.
The base model seems like the sweet spot to us, but we’d appreciate the upgrade to the $55,000 Technology Package for the MDX A-Spec, leather upholstery and a 550-watt, 12-speaker ELS sound system. Make it standard with a $61,000 cap and absorb the $2,200 fee for all-wheel drive. It’s mostly an exterior update with blacked-out trim and more ruggedized heated and cooled front seats.
The $64,500 Advance package adds 16-way power front seats, a surround-view camera system, a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats, but paying about $4,500 more gives the MDX Type S a real try. Turbo V-6 and air suspension.
