So, according to some, the Pilot is much more attractive than the MDX (which is objectively true). So why is Honda doing this? Won’t this hurt MDX sales?

The 2023 Acura MDX leans more on the refined utility side with a performance-oriented Type S model with a more refined design, seating for seven with a leather-trimmed interior, and an air suspension that takes full advantage of its impressive handling.

The difference between the base models is more than $13,000, and the difference increases as you go upscale, with a price difference of more than $20,000 between the two models. Here’s whether we think it’s worth it and how the Pilot and MDX perform.

Skip the base Pilot LX and the smaller touchscreen and get the Pilot Sport for at least $40,495. It has heated front seats, power adjustment and tri-zone climate control. But the best value for most features is the EX-L. Priced at $43,295 or $43,595 with second-row captain’s chairs, the EX-L adds leather upholstery, a 9.0-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone compatibility and charging, a nine-speaker audio system, and a power liftgate. That’s about as good as a base Acura MDX for just over $50,000.

If all-wheel drive is a must, you might consider the $49,695 TrailSport edition or the top-of-the-line $53,375 Pilot Elite. Both come with standard AWD. Otherwise, it will cost you $2,100. The TrailSport comes with off-road equipment and a panoramic sunroof. The Elite adds navigation, 20-inch wheels, a removable second-row center seat, 12-speaker Bose audio, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster display, a surround view camera system, and a head-up display. At that point, our eyes shift to MDX.

Priced at $50,745 including destination, the Acura MDX is well-equipped compared to other premium and luxury three-row crossover SUVs. It features 19-inch wheels, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and a panoramic sunroof. However, there is a caveat. The infotainment screen uses a sketchy console touchpad, which could theoretically be safer than using a touchscreen. If you want to enjoy all the digital interfaces modern cars have to offer, test your tolerance for them before buying the MDX.

The base model seems like the sweet spot to us, but we’d appreciate the upgrade to the $55,000 Technology Package for the MDX A-Spec, leather upholstery and a 550-watt, 12-speaker ELS sound system. Make it standard with a $61,000 cap and absorb the $2,200 fee for all-wheel drive. It’s mostly an exterior update with blacked-out trim and more ruggedized heated and cooled front seats.
