He is six years old. But it still looks clean and fresh, and its driving dynamics continue to deliver. Still, six years is a long time in the automotive world, so Mazda has given the CX-9 some styling and technical updates for 2021 to keep it relevant.

In the case of my top-of-the-line CX-9 Signature test car, 2021 brings three exterior changes. The grille is now in Titanium Grey, there are larger tailpipes at the rear, and the whole package is fitted with new 20-inch Brilliant Silver wheels. None of the changes are surprising – especially the nimble 10-spoke wheels – but the CX-9’s overall design remains good.

Slip into the Signature cabin and you’re greeted by an attractive, straightforward dashboard made of really nice materials. The upper parts of the dash and door panels are soft to the touch, the hard plastics on the bottom are well finished, and the Santos Rosewood trim makes the entire interior feel premium. In addition, the leather seats in the first and second rows get new diamond-stitched bolsters and contrasting edging, while the right-hand aluminum trim now has a patterned finish.

These updates join other premium amenities on the CX-9 Signature, such as three-level heated and cooled front seats, heated second-row captain’s seats and a soft leather-wrapped heated steering wheel. There’s also a standard-sized moonroof, which will disappoint fans of massive panoramic glass roofs, as Mazda doesn’t have them.

Front space is generous with comfortable and supportive front buckets, large door compartments and a large center armrest. The captain’s chairs in the middle row are level with the sides with enough room for adults, but the rear seats are incredibly cramped. Headroom and legroom for anyone over 5ft 6in is basically non-existent, but at least there are cup holders in the back and a couple of USB ports for any kids you bring along.

In the cargo space category, the CX-9 lags behind the competition. With all seats in place, there’s 14.4 cubic feet for the third row, rising to 71.2 cubic feet when both rear rows are folded. By comparison, it is behind the back seats

It has a mighty 21 cubic meters. With the rear rows collapsed, the Honda (82.1 cubic meters), Kia (87 cubic meters) and Toyota (84.3 cubic meters) are all inferior to the Mazda.

The most noticeable update to Mazda’s largest crossover is the addition of a 10.3-inch center infotainment screen. The big screen is standard on all CX-9 models, offering clean resolution and passable graphics, but it’s still not a touchscreen, so you have to fiddle with the center console controller to get to your destination in the standard Signature navigation system.

Even without touchscreen capability, Mazda Connect is a fairly intuitive interface that controls the 12-speaker Bose audio system, satellite radio, Bluetooth and a Wi-Fi hotspot. If you’re afraid of Mazda’s technology and some of the presentation staff, you can opt to control the infotainment via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The CX-9 certainly isn’t short of power points, with a wireless charging pad at the base of the center console, USB charging ports within reach of all three rows of seats and 12-volt sockets in the front and boot.

On the driver assistance technology front, every CX-9 has adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert. The safety technical menu of My Signature Tester is further enhanced with front and rear parking sensors, a head-up display, traffic sign recognition and a 360-degree camera system with respectable image quality.

Every CX-9 is powered by a 2.5-liter turbo I4. When running on 93-octane fuel, the big-block four offers 250 horsepower and 320 Nft of torque, the latter available at 2,500 rpm. Regular 87-octane gas is also an option, but output drops to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft. Either way, the CX-9 is instantly lively in Sport mode as it pulls away from stops, and continues to pull strongly in the middle of the rev range, making it easier to pass slower traffic and smoothly merge onto expressways.

The CX-9’s engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which is outdated by today’s standards due to the proliferation of eight-, nine- and 10-speed transmissions. Operationally, though, there’s not much to complain about with the six-speed transmission, providing slick and smooth shifts and helping achieve class-competitive EPA-estimated fuel economy figures of 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

The Mazda’s powertrain, however, is on the louder side of the sound spectrum, and slight vibrations are evident when you rev ​​the engine up to the 6,300-rpm redline. The CX-9 provides some towing power compared to its V6 rivals, with a capacity of 3,500 pounds. The four-wheel-drive Pilot, Telluride and Highlander can each tow 5,000 pounds.

On the road, the CX-9’s ride is firm, with suspension that absorbs little to moderate bumps, and the cabin remains remarkably quiet from annoying road and wind noise. Take this crossover into a corner and its body movement is always maintained, with a little dive under braking and cornering lean before you drop and run through the turns. The 20-inch Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422 Plus tires offer good grip. Add responsive and well-weighted steering along with powerful brakes that are easy to adjust, and you’ve got a three-row crossover that offers the sportiest reflexes in its class.

The featured version of the CX-9 pictured is expensive, stickering at $48,575 as tested. Mind you, it comes with standard four-wheel drive, a fancy Nappa leather interior, and all the driver-assist tech you could want, but I’d be willing to give up a few goodies for a softer hit to the bank account.

For my build, I’ll start with the all-wheel-drive Touring model, which starts at $39,025, plus $1,175 for destination. This trim comes standard with 18-inch wheels, leather interior and heated front seats, as well as must-have features like blind spot monitoring and LED headlights that are standard on all CX-9s. Then I shelled out $395 for Snowflake White Pearl Mica paint and $2,060 for the Touring Premium package, mostly for the Bose sound system, satellite radio, front and rear parking sensors, and a wireless phone charger. Overall, my ideal Mazda looks more reasonable at $41,480.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 starts at $35,335 with a front-wheel-drive destination, placing it among the likes of Honda, Kia and Toyota. Upgrade to all-wheel drive for an additional $1,900. While the CX-9 doesn’t offer as much functionality as its rivals, the Mazda has a healthy dose of style, a truly premium interior and tighter handling than the rest. If those emotional qualities are enough to get you past the cramped third row and cargo space, I wouldn’t blame you. But if that’s not enough to overcome the practical drawbacks, I can’t blame you for looking elsewhere. FINE.

You sit alone in the bright dining room. The only thing you will have with you is a cup of coffee and 12 empty tables, all to yourself. In our big 3-row SUV test last year, the 2020 CX-9 was just good enough to finish seventh in a battle with the best Honda (Pilot), Subaru (Ascent), Ford (Explorer) and five others. For 2021, Mazda did not change the recipe too much.
