In fact, the CX-5 trails some of its major competitors in terms of ample cargo room and rear-seat legroom. And while you still have the turbocharged four-cylinder option and the new Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trim levels loaded to the gills, adding more power and efficiency increases the CX-5’s price.

For the 2019 model year, Mazda has added Premium Cruiser and Signature trim levels to the top of the CX-5 family. Both models come standard with all-wheel drive and a new four-cylinder engine. Signature is the choice for anyone who hates deciding between options. This is because it is equipped with the best safety features that can be added to the CX-5, including heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, Nappa leather, 360-degree camera system, 19-inch alloy wheels, and Bose audio system. From the driver’s seat, reviewer Fred Meier said the CX-5 in Signature trim is “very close” to a premium SUV. As tested, the CX-5 had a sticker price of $39,325. The base CX-5 starts at $25,395 (all prices include destination charge).
Mazda has upped its CX-5 game when it comes to horsepower. For 2019, a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is available that produces 227 horsepower when running on neutral air and 250 horsepower when running on prime feed. . The base 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder is good, but “the turbo is for buyers looking for the right thing,” Meier wrote in his review.

So you want the comfort and space of an SUV, but hate sacrificing driving fun in the process? Fortunately, the Mazda CX-5 has a flexible roof and perhaps the best handling you’ll find in an expensive SUV. Meier said the Mazda has “very precise and responsive steering.” Apply that standard to most other family-owned SUVs.
The Mazda CX-5 is more than just a luxury vehicle with good handling. It also has an interior that feels several steps above its direct rivals. This is especially true in the flagship Signature trim level, which is decked out in real wood accents, satin trim and premium leather, including piano black floorboards. Fortunately, even the base CX-5 has a cabin that looks and feels like it belongs in a flagship product.
Design is a thing, but it’s hard to deny that the Mazda CX-5 stands out from the crowd. It looks elegant without going over the table. A unique front end and sculpted sides make the CX-5 stand out on the road.
Sometimes the best SUVs and SUVs get you a front row seat but drop the ball when it comes to the back seats. This is not the case with the Mazda CX-5. Improvements to quality, floorboards and soft materials extend to the rear seats. Rear seat space is generous, but legroom is adequate for the class. Although it’s not as much as what you’d find in a Honda CR-V or Nissan Rogue.

The Mazda CX-5 has sharp wheels. This is especially true if you opt for 19-inch alloy wheels on higher trim levels. Our test car featured smoky alloys, very similar to the Signature CX-5 model. In contrast, the standard CX-5 with 17-inch rims looks a bit smaller.
The Mazda CX-5 has a clear, informative head-up display full of useful information. This is one of those features that most people don’t know they want until they have it. The clarity and crisp graphics make the CX-5’s HUD system a great addition.
Many good machines have been damaged by backfires. I’m happy to report that the CX-5’s six-speed automatic transmission is smooth and quick when shifting gears. Meier said this gearbox looks better than the regular transmissions found in the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue. But he also wondered whether an eight-speed automatic, like the type used in the VW Tiguan, might perform better.
The Mazda CX-5 earned the highest score, a Top Safety Pick Plus rating, in safety testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The base CX-5 Sport comes with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitor, and low-speed frontal collision system. Upping the trim beyond the base CX-5 gets you more standard safety features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane assist, and automatic high beams.

The Mazda CX-5, like its predecessor, is closer to the luxury brand. Speaking of trivia, can you miss out on the Mazda luxury brand before its official U.S. launch? (Answer: His name is Amati. Go and see. We’ll be waiting). Back to the here and now: The CX-5’s infotainment system is slow to start up and takes too long to switch between screens and menus. In his review, Meyer also said that the 7-inch screen is a bit smaller than the 8-inch screen that many fans have. Another story: A touchscreen only works as a touchscreen when it’s stationary. When moving, you must use the controller and buttons located on the center console between the front seats.
Cargo room in the CX-5 is good. There is 30.9 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. By comparison, the Honda CR-V offers 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Finally, the CX-5 has a 40/20/40 split folding rear seat for when you need to haul large, bulky items.
The power is rotten but I can’t pay the gas bill. We like the extra boost the new four-cylinder engine provides, but we wish our Signature AWD test vehicle would perform better than the EPA-rated 22/27/24 city/road/combined mpg a. Fortunately, these cars run on expensive fuel.
Are you holding your phone while driving? Although a little smaller, the CX-5’s front USB port is very different. There are two exits, located behind the central storage space between the front seats and under the armrest. This is not a part-time job, but it is something that can be easily organized.
