For the 2019 model year, Mazda has added Premium Cruiser and Signature trim levels to the top of the CX-5 family. Both models come standard with all-wheel drive and a new four-cylinder engine. Signature is the choice for anyone who hates deciding between options. This is because it is equipped with the best safety features that can be added to the CX-5, including heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, Nappa leather, 360-degree camera system, 19-inch alloy wheels, and Bose audio system. From the driver’s seat, reviewer Fred Meier said the CX-5 in Signature trim is “very close” to a premium SUV. As tested, the CX-5 had a sticker price of $39,325. The base CX-5 starts at $25,395 (all prices include destination charge).

Mazda has upped its CX-5 game when it comes to horsepower. For 2019, a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is available that produces 227 horsepower when running on neutral air and 250 horsepower when running on prime feed. . The base 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder is good, but “the turbo is for buyers looking for the right thing,” Meier wrote in his review.

Improvements to quality, floorboards and soft materials extend to the rear seats. Rear seat space is generous, but legroom is adequate for the class. Although it’s not as much as what you’d find in a Honda CR-V or Nissan Rogue.

The Mazda CX-5 has sharp wheels. This is especially true if you opt for 19-inch alloy wheels on higher trim levels. Our test car featured smoky alloys, very similar to the Signature CX-5 model. In contrast, the standard CX-5 with 17-inch rims looks a bit smaller.

The Mazda CX-5 has a clear, informative head-up display full of useful information. This is one of those features that most people don’t know they want until they have it. The clarity and crisp graphics make the CX-5’s HUD system a great addition.

Many good machines have been damaged by backfires. I’m happy to report that the CX-5’s six-speed automatic transmission is smooth and quick when shifting gears. Meier said this gearbox looks better than the regular transmissions found in the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue. But he also wondered whether an eight-speed automatic, like the type used in the VW Tiguan, might perform better.

The Mazda CX-5 earned the highest score, a Top Safety Pick Plus rating, in safety testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The base CX-5 Sport comes with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitor, and low-speed frontal collision system. Upping the trim beyond the base CX-5 gets you more standard safety features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane assist, and automatic high beams.
