There are no EPA ratings yet for 2018, but the front-drive 2017 CX-5 is rated at 24/31/27 mpg city/highway/combined, and Mazda estimates the new technology will increase those numbers by 1. mpg. . The engine’s 187-hp figure remains the same.
Also notable for 2018 is the democratization of the CX-5 suite of driver assistance and safety technologies across all trim levels. The package includes front collision system with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams with automatic dimming, automatic headlights, rain wipers and lane keeping system.

The 2018 Sport model gets standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The cloth-trimmed Sport has a leather steering wheel and shift knob. These features were previously exclusive to the Touring and Grand Touring.
Along with new standard safety technology, the Touring trim level on the 2018 Mazda CX-5 adds standard 19-inch alloy wheels, leather seats and keyless entry. The top-of-the-line Grand Touring gets two new memory drivers for the power driver’s seat and the six-way power passenger seat.
No word yet on smartphone integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which Mazda says is in development and could be added to the new Mazda CX-5 when it becomes available.
The base 2018 CX-5 Sport with front-wheel drive starts at $25,125, up $140 and at $975 (from $940). The Touring trim level with front-wheel drive starts at $335 to $27,190, while the Grand Touring starts at $30,620, up $285. Add $1,300 for all-wheel drive (AWD) on each trim level.

For now, if Mazda only offers the CX-5 with the turbo 2.5-liter four-cylinder found in the CX-9, and only adds it as an option for the 2018 Mazda6 sedan … let’s hope. The CX-5 is Mazda’s best-selling vehicle, and it’s a very important vehicle to update, especially with the arrival of new crossovers on the market. We borrowed the 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring AWD for a week to see if it’s good enough to keep up with the Mazda family’s charge.

The new Mazda CX-5 brings much-awaited exterior updates to match the styling of the CX-9. Therefore, the large grille extends to the headlights and creates a suitable “zoom-zoom” face. Mazda doesn’t offer much in terms of colors – red, blue, white and plain black – but the Soul Red color on our CX-5 is so deep that it immerses you in it with vibrant tones. Redness depends on light. The CX-5 was one of the more aggressive SUVs in the segment, and this refresh keeps it that way. A quick walk outside shows that this Mazda has no bad corners. What the CX-9 cannot boast of is its “unique” grille.
Moving inside, paper-trimmed leather seats, contrast black trim and carpets are simple yet stunning. Aluminum door handles and accents, combined with faux wood trim, create a stylish and luxurious cabin. The seats are comfortable and spacious for front and rear passengers. The usual Mazda entertainment center has appeared and remains the worst feature of the new Mazda car. It’s out of place in newer cars, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren’t coming soon. However, the audio controls in the center stack, near the shifter, are more useful and easier to access than the controls near the screen in other cars.
On the road, the Mazda’s driving characteristics are immediately recognizable. Steering feel is fairly weighty, and the CX-5 handles better than any SUV in its price range. At $32,000, our Grand Touring model is the top of the range. Features like heated seats are welcome, but we found the sunroof’s mailbox a little disappointing. Budget crossovers like the new Kia Sportage offer a nice panoramic sunroof, and Mazda could benefit from an upgrade here. The 2.5L four-cylinder engine produces 187 horsepower and 186lb-ft of torque. These numbers seem reasonable, but when it comes to Mazda’s AWD system, the car is quite slow. Our tester went from a standstill to 60MPH in just 9 seconds. All the speed and driving excitement we saw in the CX-9 is completely gone.
Unfortunately, the Mazda CX-5 is almost perfect in every way. Complaints about the sunroof and sound system are minimal, while fit, finish and handling are better than most rivals. The lack of power is surprising compared to Mazda’s latest offerings. However, it looks like Mazda is planning to make the excellent 2.5 turbo motor from the CX-9 and additional handling features an option for 2019. It should be a night and day difference and combine to create the ultimate sporty crossover that the CX-5 is meant to be. will be Everything is included.
