However, there is a new option for buyers: the Honda CR-V Hybrid. For the 2020 model year, Honda introduced a hybrid version of its best-selling SUV for the first time. The regular CR-V is Edmunds’ top-rated non-hybrid SUV ahead of the regular RAV4.

Is the CR-V good enough overall to beat the Toyota Hybrid Experience? Edmunds’ team of experts will compare the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid and the 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to determine the winner.
Toyota and Honda are asking prices below $3,000 for hybrid models of their popular SUVs. Depending on the destination, starting at $29,870, the CR-V Hybrid runs neck and neck with the RAV4 Hybrid, which starts at $26,650. The price is the same when looking at the full model. All-wheel drive is standard on both these hybrid SUVs.
According to EPA estimates, the CR-V Hybrid gets 38 mpg in combined driving. But in a real-world test analysis, we took the trouble to replicate the EPA’s numbers. Our test CR-V Hybrid got 32 mpg. In contrast, we found it easy to reach the RAV4 Hybrid’s EPA estimate of 40 mpg. Our test RAV4 Hybrid posted 36 mpg.
The RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid offer a spacious interior with plenty of room for front and rear passengers. Both are easy to get in and out of and offer good visibility thanks to high driving positions.

This small SUV also has a lot of functionality. But the Toyota CR-V offers 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space compared to the Seeds, which grew to 33.2 cubic feet, and the rear seats are easy to raise and lower.
Toyota has placed several boxes and shelves in the cabin to store small items. But CR-V variants are often different and smarter. If installing a car seat is a daily activity, the Honda’s slightly more generous rear seat legroom will make loading and unloading your valuables a little easier.
The Honda CR-V seeds the fact that the front seats are more comfortable than the Toyota. Both vehicles offer plenty of legroom for rear passengers, but the CR-V Hybrid can opt for a higher seating position.
Honda does a little better with the CR-V’s interior materials to make it look and feel more modern. The CR-V Hybrid also offers excellent isolation from road imperfections and engine vibrations, resulting in a unique driving experience. The RAV4 engine can be rough under acceleration.
Honda Cr V Hybrid Vs. Toyota Rav4 Hybrid
The RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid offer comprehensive packages to help drivers. Features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking are standard. As for how these systems work, we’ve found Hondas to be a little too cautious or annoying.
Infotainment offerings are generally similar, but the design of each car’s infotainment interface leaves something to be desired. Honda’s system feels dated, and its physical buttons can be hard to press and slow to respond. The dated graphics of Toyota’s systems don’t do it any favors, but easy-to-press buttons and the availability of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity come standard on every RAV4 Hybrid.
Straight-line performance isn’t always at the top of hybrid buyers’ lists, but having enough power to connect on the freeway or two-way street is still important. The RAV4 Hybrid feels quicker on the throttle than the CR-V Hybrid. In Edmonds’ experiment, 60 mph was a full second.
The CR-V Hybrid outperforms the RAV4 Hybrid in handling and braking performance and feel. The Honda offers excellent handling and smooth, powerful braking. The CR-V Hybrid also offers a smooth transition from the electric motor to the combustion engine.
Hybrid Head To Head: 2021 Honda Cr V Hybrid Vs. Toyota Rav4 Hybrid
Edmonds says: Both the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid and the 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid are smart buys that justify slightly higher prices than conventional models. They are closely related and your choice can be based on your personal needs. But in the end, Edmunds recommends the CR-V Hybrid. Although it’s not as capable as the RAV4 Hybrid, its refinement, performance and comfort make for a great daily driver.

I’ve driven both and here’s how they fare in the areas of speed, fuel economy and price.
According to the numbers, electric blades seem to have the same power, but in reality they work completely differently. The RAV4 Hybrid is faster than the CR-V Hybrid (and the standard RAV4); which remains strong for incredibly quick and smooth transitions from a standstill. Meanwhile, the CR-V Hybrid takes a while to get up from a stop, but remains quiet enough for ample passing power.
The RAV4 Hybrid combines a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine with electric motors, a nickel-metal hydride battery pack, and a continuously variable automatic transmission for a total of 219 horsepower. The CR-V Hybrid operates without a conventional automatic transmission; It combines a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, an electric drive motor and an electric motor-generator, and the total system power is 212 horsepower.
Both models have an EV mode that allows for short-term electric-operation when selected, but each has difficulty maintaining that mode for long periods and high test speeds.
Honda Cr V Vs. 2022 Toyota Rav4 Comparison
The numbers are close, but Toyota wins by far. The RAV4 Hybrid, which comes standard with all-wheel drive, is rated by the EPA at 41/38/40 mpg city/highway/base L model, over the non-hybrid AWD L’s 27/33 rating. /29 mpg.
Meanwhile, the standard CR-V Hybrid with AWD responds with a close mpg rating; It’s EPA-rated at 40/35/38 mpg, compared to the non-hybrid model’s 27/32/29 mpg rating.
The 2020 CR-V Hybrid starts at $28,870 for the base LX trim, slightly less than the base LE RAV4 Hybrid at $28,470 (price includes destination).
Both models are well equipped in the safety department. The CR-V comes standard with the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver assistance technologies, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control.
Honda Cr V Hybrid: Cheaper Than Rav4 Hybrid, But Slightly Less Efficient
The RAV4 Hybrid comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0 system; It offers forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, full speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beam, road sign assist and lane keep assist.
The two models are close, but the RAV4 is ahead. Price is a big consideration, but the RAV4 is very efficient and very confident in the power department.
