NARS claims to offer one or more products labeled “vegan formula,” but because NARS tests on animals, nothing NARS sells or makes would be classified as vegan.

☠️ NARS in 2023 is NOT cruelty free. NARS allows its products to be tested on animals when required by law, even when sold in stores in mainland China.

When you ask, does NARS test on animals? We need to go further to ensure that none of NARS’ ingredients or suppliers are tested on animals. And they do not sell in any country or under conditions that require animal testing by law.

To evaluate whether brands are cruelty-free, I always start with the company’s official policy on animal testing on their website.

Policies that state “unless required by law” generally mean that the company distributes its products in countries that require animal testing, such as mainland China.

In June 2017, NARS announced on its Instagram that it had decided to start selling its cosmetics in China. As a result, NARS must allow testing of its cosmetics on animals upon registration in China.

Check out this post on Instagram. We want you to know that we hear you. Global abolition of animal testing must occur. We firmly believe that the safety of products and ingredients can be demonstrated using animal-free methods, but we must comply with local laws in the markets in which we operate, including China. We decided to make NARS available in China because we believe it is important to bring our vision of beauty and art to fans in the region. NARS does not test on animals and does not ask third parties to do so on our behalf unless required by law. NARS is committed and actively working to develop alternative testing methods. We are proud to support the Institute of In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), a world-renowned organization at the forefront of advancing non-animal methods in China and around the world. NARS hopes that we can work together for a cruelty-free world. With recent changes to China’s animal testing laws, cosmetics companies can now export and sell some of their cosmetic products in China without animal testing only if they first meet ALL of the following prerequisites.

However, nowhere is it stated that NARS has taken measures to meet the above-mentioned prerequisites to prevent animal testing during sale in China.

Follow the highlighted lines in the image below to find out why the law will still require most cosmetics sold in China (like NARS) to be tested on animals in 2023.

Because NARS has chosen to sell in stores in mainland China, they must accept and pay for their products to be tested on animals. Therefore, most cosmetic brands sold in mainland China cannot be considered cruelty-free in 2023.

Although NARS cannot conduct these animal tests itself, it knowingly allows Chinese authorities to test its products on animals for sale in China.

Makeup Brand Nars Is Sorry For Animal Testing, But It’s Not Going To Stop Either

Many truly cruelty-free brands have chosen not to sell their products in China under conditions where animal testing might be necessary. Unfortunately, NARS refuses to do the same and therefore cannot be considered cruelty-free.

At Ethics Elephant, we always evaluate a company’s cruelty-free policy using our cruelty-free checklist. This ensures that no animal testing was performed by the brand itself, its suppliers or third parties, even if required by law.

Check out our complete cruelty-free checklist below. Since NARS no longer meets the bottom two, the brand cannot be labeled as cruelty-free.

Because NARS has not been certified cruelty-free by a third party, no one is substantiating or auditing NARS’ cruelty-free commitments and claims.

Some cruelty-free consumers may choose to purchase and support cruelty-free brands owned by parent companies that test on animals, in the hope that this will convince the parent company to become cruelty-free.

In conclusion, NARS allows its products to be tested on animals when required by law, such as when sold in China. Therefore, you would NOT consider NARS a cruelty-free brand.

❌NARS is NOT vegan. NARS claims to offer some “vegan” options that do not contain animal ingredients, but NARS participates in animal testing to some extent, so no NARS products would be considered vegan at this time.

The standards, products and their ingredients must not be tested on animals anywhere in the world. They must also not contain ingredients or by-products of animal origin.

Sephora Brand Spotlight: Nars

Want to say hello, ask a question, submit a special request, or collaborate? – I would like to hear from you! Connect with us at [email protected]. Nars is a brand that has existed since the beginning of this blog and although I made a post a few years ago I thought it was time for an update, since my collection has grown a lot. . This is going to be a very long post with my favorite products and the ones I no longer use (some returns too), so sit back and prepare your wish list!

I kept Nars Radiance Primer in my collection just for this blog post when I finally decided to make it. Although it’s too old to use on my skin, it used to be one of my favorites. It was lightweight and could be used under a tinted moisturizer or a medium coverage foundation to boost radiance and perfectly perk up the skin.

Now, the definitive return: Nars Sheer Glow Foundation*. I first reviewed this when I started blogging and my opinion on it has changed over the years. On days when my skin was oilier, I couldn’t get enough because it provided excellent coverage and lasted all day. My complexion has changed a lot lately and while I think the NaturalRadiantLongwear* option now suits my dry skin better, Sheer Glow will always make me nostalgic. I personally have a bit of difficulty with Nars foundations as they tend to have more pink tones, while I’m more neutral. That being said, the formulas are great, so if you want to try them, try them before you buy them.

Nars Radiant Concealer* has also been in my collection for years, I’ve reviewed tubes and it’s still one of my favorites. I’m currently using it all over my face; under my eyes, even on blemishes and redness. It’s great if you like a concealer with a lightweight but medium coverage formula, as you can apply it as needed and it will still look natural.

The other offering is the Soft Matte Complete Concealer, which is quite different as it comes in a pot, meaning you have to use your finger or a sponge to apply it.
