“But that’s not necessarily true,” says Jack McKenzie, managing director of Auto Accessories Garage. “Unless the car owner has filed an insurance claim, an accident or flood won’t show up on a Carfax report.”

Another trick: When the Carfax doesn’t come back clean, dealers may tell you the system is “down.”

The more cars I buy, the less I tolerate lies. If a dealership can’t give me a door-to-door price on a car, I’ll walk. If they argue about the price, I walk away. If a salesperson tries to steer me to a more expensive model, I’m out.
