With prices ranging from $200 to $500, buying a new gaming system is an investment, and choosing which platform can be difficult. The best game consoles offer a fun experience, but each offers a different range of exclusive games and they can vary greatly in price and multimedia capabilities.
If you’re looking for blockbusters and cutting-edge visuals, the Sony PS5 is our pick for the best gaming console. But if you grew up with classic games like Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, the handheld Nintendo Switch might be a better choice. If you want extensive media features and the ability to try lots of new games for a monthly subscription, the Xbox Series X could be a game changer.

I have years of experience with all the latest consoles and have tried them all since they were released. Below, I’ve broken down what each major system does best to help you decide which game console is right for you.
PS5’s library of exclusive games and unique DualSense controller make it the ultimate gaming console for most gamers.
The Switch’s ability to seamlessly transition between handheld and built-in gaming remains impressive, and its low price makes it a great choice for casual gamers.
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X is the ideal hub for any home entertainment setup, slightly improving on the PS5 and offering additional media features and great benefits like Xbox Game Pass.
Best Retro Game Consoles 2023
The Xbox Series S is a great console for its price, but it doesn’t have a controller and can’t match the graphics capabilities of the Series X or PS5.
Released in November 2020, the PS5 helped set a new standard for gaming consoles with its M.2 solid state drive (SSD), DualSense controller and support for 4K with a 120Hz refresh rate. In 2023, Sony updated the console design with a slimmer factor that takes up 30% less space and has a slightly larger 1 TB SSD.
The PlayStation 5 is now available in two versions: the standard PS5 Slim ($500) and the Digital Edition PS5 Slim ($450). The digital edition will not include a 4K Blu-ray disc, but otherwise the consoles will offer the same performance. If you want to buy physical PS5 games or have a collection of old PS4 discs, we recommend buying a PS5 with a disc. However, the PS5 Slim Digital Edition lets you add a disc later for $80. The PS5’s popularity is largely fueled by PlayStation-exclusive game franchises such as Spider-Man, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, The Last of Us and Gran Turismo. Many of these exclusives take advantage of the unique features of the console’s DualSense controller, such as haptic vibration feedback, flexible triggers and a built-in microphone. These popular games and controller features help give the PS5 a bit of an edge over the Xbox Series X, making it hard to pass up the console for gamers who want to play the latest blockbusters.

However, Sony still has work to do to make its PS5 game subscription service PlayStation Plus a true competitor to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass. PlayStation Plus Premium was launched in June 2022 and gives players access to a library of nearly 400 downloadable games, but does not include newly released games such as Microsoft’s service.
The standard PS5 can also work well as a media device thanks to its 4K Blu-ray disc and support for many streaming apps. However, if you think you’ll be using your console a lot as a media player, you might want to consider the Xbox Series X instead, as it supports true digital movie store and Dolby Vision streaming. The PS5 is limited to HDR10 streaming, and its store only allows you to buy movies made by Sony.
But judged solely as a games console, we think the PS5 currently has a stronger range of exclusive games. In particular, many high-end Xbox releases can also be played on a gaming PC.

Both the Switch OLED and the standard $300 Switch come with two detachable Joy-Cons that can be used as individual motion controllers, making it ideal for playing with a friend on the go. Nintendo Switch games come in durable cartridges instead of Blu-ray discs, making it easy to store and travel. The console also has expandable memory with a MicroSD slot, so you can increase the internal memory from a very small 64 GB (OLED) or 32 GB (standard model) up to 2 TB to store more digital games.
If you’re not into gaming on your TV, there’s also the $200 Switch Lite. This option is ideal for standalone handheld gaming, but it’s not dockable and doesn’t have detachable Joy-Con controllers. The portable screen is only 13% smaller than the standard Switch, while the Lite is thinner and easier to hold. The Switch Lite battery lasts about seven hours, while the standard and OLED Switch models last up to nine hours.
While the Switch’s hardware is showing its age compared to the capabilities of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, it remains a capable console with a large library that’s especially great for families. Popular franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon can only be found on Switch, and many classic games have been remastered for the Nintendo system.

The Xbox Series X is a multimedia powerhouse, with support for 4K Blu-ray and many of the major streaming services. Unlike the PS5, the Series X offers movies and TV shows from every major studio through Microsoft’s digital stores, and you can stream and share media with Windows PCs.

Xbox Series X also supports Dolby Vision, an enhanced high dynamic range (HDR) format that helps compatible TVs improve picture quality with improved color accuracy and contrast. Along with video games, the feature can also be used on streaming apps like Disney Plus. Unfortunately, Blu-ray discs played on the Xbox Series X cannot use Dolby Vision, but they can use the more common HDR10 format, which the PS5 also supports.
The Xbox Series X is more powerful than the PS5 in terms of performance thanks to a slightly faster CPU and more powerful GPU. However, in practice, the X-series games did not show a huge visual advantage over the PS5 titles. The downside is that the Xbox controller lacks the haptic feedback and flexible triggers of the PS5 DualSense, which can add an extra tactile feel to gameplay.
Series X has some great exclusives like Starfield, Forza Motorsport and Halo Infinite, but all of those titles are also available on PC. We think the PS5 exclusive library is a bit more important. However, this is a matter of personal preference, so some gamers may find Microsoft’s catalog more appealing.
But any way you look at it, the Xbox Series X is a great centerpiece for any home entertainment setup and can offer a great gaming and movie experience. If you are older, the console is pointless
