What Happens If I Return My Car To The Dealer – If you’re a regular reader of this site, you know that travelers can make all kinds of costly mistakes when it comes to rental cars. But Rose Hidalgo’s $2,000 mistake was the first for our support group. He was scheduled at Oakland International Airport, dropped off a rental car.
As a result of his mistake, the car was lost for two weeks. And Thrifty pays her $140 a day until an employee finds the car at a nearby Thrifty location.

Now Rose is asking if we can get Thrifty to adjust the $2,000 bill to a more reasonable one.

In May, Gul wanted to rent a car to drive to her daughter’s high school graduation. Going through the various deals on offer, it was clear that Thrifty offered their best deal of the day. So he informed him.
On May 25, he arrived at the Oakland airport and went to the Thrifty counter. After reviewing the rental car agreement and inspecting the vehicle for damage, he took off. The initial cost of renting a car kept Rose from paying $224 for the two-day event.
Rose says she had a great time celebrating her daughter’s graduation and that everything went off without a hitch.
“On May 27, at 11 am, I returned the car as per my lease agreement,” Rose recalled. “I pulled into the rental car lane and gave the keys to an employee.”

Rose didn’t think twice about renting a car when she got home. He was too busy enjoying the excitement of his degree.
It took several days before he realized there was a problem – a big problem with this car rental.
Four days after Rose returned home, she received an unexpected email from Hertz (Thrifty’s parent company). It turns out that the rental car he returned was missing.
Hertz says the rental car is still in the customer’s possession and they want it back.

“I don’t know what’s going on, but I got the car back,” Rose told me. “So I immediately asked the local branch.”
For the next nine days, Rose spent every day at this cheap place to find out what happened to the rental car. Every day the company adds an additional $140 to Rose’s tab.
On June 9, 14 days after Rose returned the car, Thrifty finally confirmed that the rental had been located. Apparently, Rose made a mistake and returned the rental car to the wrong company. He put it in the budget area instead of Thrifty’s, where it belongs. These two parking spaces are only a yard apart.

The call from Thrifty was a relief. He will not pay for the lost rental car as other travelers have contacted our group for help. He was also glad to know that Hertz wouldn’t let the local police take him for grand theft auto.
But that good news comes with some unexpected, expensive news for Rose: If you return your rental car to the wrong company, you’ll pay.
“In a nice voice message, Hartz told me they found the car,” Rose told me. “But the company wants to pay me $1,999 for the days the car was missing.” Can they?”
When nothing got Hertz to negotiate a lower price, Rose turned to the Internet. He then found some of my articles about similar car rental mistakes. He wanted me to help him.

When Rose sent her prayer for help, I was in the middle of my 8,000 mile endless road trip across the United States. I found his email in a midwestern town in Wyoming with few connections.
I sent the Hertz management contacts to him who bought Customer Rescue Research for passengers in distress. Rose continued to cry as we talked and I caught in the nest.
Fast forward a few weeks, and Rose didn’t get the response he expected from Hertz.

Unfortunately, Rose made a mistake and returned the rental car to the wrong company (Budget instead of Thrifty). Although there was an attendant who gave the keys, no one warned him that he was leaving the car with the wrong company! Apparently, the Deputy Treasurer agreed with the car and stopped. A few days later he received a message that Hertz was looking for him to return the car. He explained that he took the car back to the airport. Hertz found the car on June 9 and then paid Rose about $2,000 for the days the car sat on the finance lot to pay off the Hertz lot. Rose admits it was her mistake but hopes she doesn’t pay too much for it. Also, it appears that the Treasury did not inform Hertz that one of its vehicles was located a short distance away. I know from previous posts I’ve written that Thrifty has multiple GPS devices in their vehicles. Is there a way to check if the car was registered back when it was “free” and maybe the surveyor made a mistake (the car is missing)? I was hoping that your team would look into this situation and see if the fee could be reduced. thank you! Hertz reviewed all the facts of this case and agreed that $140 per day was not a reasonable rental rate.

Rose wasn’t sure if it was right, so I dug a little more. I checked a few other exceptions, including Rose’s claim that all return routes at Oakland International Airport are the same. I thought it was true that the price could be lower.
A quick Google search brought me to this post which shows two separate lists of car rental agents at Auckland Airport.

So, while I sympathized with Rose’s plight, I had to look at the facts. By all accounts, I believe Hertz made the right decision.
This version is not really Rose. He believes it is a battle between Avis and Hertz (the parent companies of Budget and Thrifty). But unfortunately, Consumer Rescue has to admit that it has made some mistakes as a customer that we cannot correct. A refund of more than $1,000 was a reasonable decision because Thrifty said the rental location was incorrect and was not available for rent for two weeks.
Of course, we are disappointed when our customers don’t get what they want, but we do our best to get them the right thing.

It is difficult to understand how Rose returned her rental car to the wrong company. What’s even easier is why the Treasury Secretary agreed to the car and let Rose go. After all, how did this rental car go unaccounted for for two weeks just yards from its original home?

Bottom line: It is not uncommon to hear about a car rental agent returning the car to the wrong company.
