Our review of the updated 2018 Volvo XC60, which kicks off the current generation, was met with enthusiastic praise. Polestar was once Volvo’s performance division (think M for BMW or AMG for Mercedes-Benz), but has recently spun off into its own company producing electric cars. The way it tells you it’s Polestar Engineered is also the same between sedan and SUV: bright yellow brake calipers with yellow seatbelts and other yellow accents inside the cabin (even the dynamic door cones are yellow). Elegant white badges and a bright grille complete the look, but these are details that will only catch the eye of the keen-eyed.

I didn’t turn the S60 into a full-fledged sports sedan, and I figured the same thing would happen with the XC60.
Placing the T8’s electric power on top of an already stout engine helps the XC60 feel even more confident. Acceleration is flawless; There were no awkward transitions between electric and gas power on the road or in the autocross. However, I must say that I was expecting a little more from the power of the XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered and the instantaneous torque from the electric motor. It has enough power for daily use, but not enough to feel as good as the S60.

It’s worth noting that I was one of the later groups to street autocross and drive the XC60, so the battery was low when I got in the car. The XC60 struggles a bit to get up quickly from a standstill; get past that and you’ll feel some vibration in the steering wheel as the traction control fights against the torque. It wobbles a bit from side to side and seems to lose power from time to time. You accelerate too quickly but this didn’t seem to be a road surface issue as it happened many times in my testing.
On the plus side, the XC60’s suspension is excellent. It’s a tall car, so there’s more hardware in the body, and I was impressed with how well the XC60 handles on the street (even with the big 22-inch wheels) and how it minimizes body roll. I did both the slalom run and the moose test version (a quick leap left, then right, braking hard at 50 mph). By the end of the slalom the XC60 was starting to get a little wobbly, but as an off-roader it was quite capable. It rides slightly firmer than other XC60 models, making it more athletic, but without the downsides you’d expect in terms of ride quality. It’s hard to maintain this line, but Volvo has done a good job here.
