The third generation (or “DE platform”) is also used in the Ford Fiesta, with four excellent engine options available. Most engine configurations are usually 1.3L or 1.5L.

Available transmissions are a four-speed electronic auto and the older CVT. Sourced from Japan, these cars will be hard to find, but a five-speed manual is also an option.

The exterior styling is very similar to the Mazda Axela, except for a cleaner look inspired by an Italian paper cutter (of all things).

The front of the car is typical of Mazdas these days, with a wide low grille with air vents on either side. There’s more on display than what you’ll find in Korean grills. By emphasizing that aspect, there is little space for the bumper of this car, which is trimmed neatly. It features narrow teardrop headlights that are set neatly back into the front side shields. The front end is attractive with a combination of bold grille and headlights.

At the rear of the Demio, the headlight clusters follow the headlight layout and are moved up to the upper fenders of the rear side panels. The bumper is pretty simple except that it’s framed in the middle where you have to push your finger when opening the rear hatch. The rear of the car is finished with a small spoiler coming out of the rear, which is small and bulging.

Unsurprisingly, the rear seats of the Mazda Demio seem more suitable for children; Not surprising given the dimensions of the car. There are no cup holders or pockets in the rear seats, but the inclusion of ISOFIX attachment points will be very useful for young families.

With the seats in place, the storage capacity is 250 litres, which isn’t the greatest, but with the rear seats folded down, it expands to 787 liters if you want to carry larger items.

Skyactiv’s 1.3 liter direct injection engine produces just 67 Kw at 6000 RPM – perfect for beginners.

Demio’s happy place around town seems to be, without a particularly ugly frame being difficult. The journey is quite natural. We like the feel of the standard four-speed automatic transmission. It’s not fast enough on highways, but that’s to be expected with an engine of this caliber.

Economically, it averaged around 5.8L/100km during our test, just below the official economy rating of 5.3L/100km. The i-stop system reduces emissions by switching off the engine instead of stopping it indiscriminately when the car is stationary.

The Demio’s drivetrain is a perfect representation of a city car of the era. It feels light and nimble around town, and the suspension feels better than the previous generation’s handling and handling. Refined in detail to improve stability and comfort.
