The Uppababy Mesa car seat attaches to the Uppababy stroller, so fans of the brand can create their own travel system.
While some car seats require a bracket to stabilize the base, the Mesa’s base has a strap that retracts automatically when you secure it in the car. This attaches the Mesa directly to the seat without the need to roll it up, keeping the car seat in place during hard driving.
The car seat itself is easily attached to the base. To remove it, grasp the handle on the back of the seat with one hand.
You can also use the Mesa without a base, an interesting feature that most other seats we’ve tried don’t support. Uppababy calls it the “European Routing System,” which essentially means you can loop the seat belt through the back of the car seat, instead of carrying the base with you when you travel.

The Uppababy Mesa weighs around 10 pounds and is one of the lightest options on the market.
Most infant car seats are heavy to carry, but the Mesa weighs just under 10 pounds, making it lighter than most competitors.
Plus, its narrow profile also means it’s easier to hide if a child joins you at a restaurant or coffee shop.
On a longer trip, I had to climb into the back seat of our CRV to comfort Lily while my husband drove, and the Mesa was thin enough to fit between that seat and our child seat.
Base For Mesa/mesa V2
This car seat wing was an experience for Lily and she loved it. She went in without protest and fell asleep almost immediately. We attribute the comfort of the seats to the seat belts, which were well padded; even when it was squeezed tightly, it didn’t dig into her neck.
The headrest felt like a comfortable neck pillow and the bottom of the strap was also padded to prevent the buckle from cutting into your child’s legs. With and without the infant pad (designed for babies 4-11lbs), Lily seemed to like the pad under her shoulders and back. The tension of the straps is also very easy to adjust with the push of a button.
Lily spits up all the time, so we were also able to test Mesa’s cleanliness and she passed the test. Although you can remove some parts to wash them, we’ve found that wiping the seat with a damp cloth usually helps.
We also liked the canopy, which extended farther than most other seats we tested and provided protection from the sun and wind.
Mesa Infant Car Seat
To use the Uppababy Mesa, you will need to purchase an Uppababy system, namely a Vista or Cruz stroller. This is a significant investment.
It works with the Uppababy Minu and Ridge strollers if you buy an adapter, but if you want to buy a cheaper stroller to use with the Mesa, you’re out of luck.
The Mesa isn’t cheap, but it’s only $60 more than some of our favorite options, and we think the extra cost is worth the extra comfort for both baby and caregiver. It’s worth noting that the Mesa will last a while: The brand says the seat fits children up to 35 pounds and 32 inches tall and is durable enough for future siblings.

Yes, the Mesa V2 media is FAA approved when used in accordance with the instruction manual. For optimal safety, we recommend traveling with the Mesa V2 during the flight. The Mesa base is not approved for use in aircraft.
No foundation is required to ensure a safe and secure installation. The lap strap passes through the carrier guides to the carry handle, and the shoulder strap passes behind the strap via a guide located above where the strap releases from the base handle. Refer to the Mesa V2 manual and vehicle owner’s manual for seat belt installation instructions.
Make sure the red line on the side of the bracket is parallel to the floor of the car, not the ground outside the car. Check that the rear corner of the carrier is in the correct position and that the carrying handle is in position 4.

With the Mesa, you won’t need a mat because the base has a machined bottom that prevents damage to the seats. If you choose to use a mat, the only non-adjustable mats approved and tested for use with the Mesa are: Brica, Munchkin Auto Seat Protector, Diono Super Mat and Diono Ultra Mat.
State and federal safety standards require all car seats to meet strict fire rating standards (also known as FMVSS 302). Mesa V2 meets this standard because it does not use flame retardant chemicals on fabric that comes into direct contact with the baby. The foam under the fabric is processed to meet this requirement, but is formulated without harmful chemicals. In addition, the Mesa V2 is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low chemical emissions (VOCs).
