The Evolve SP has a sturdy base with red stitching, although it doesn’t have bucket seats, it’s much more sporty in appearance. It’s not a proper hot hatch, so that’s to be expected.
On the plus side, the driving position is nice and low, the clutch and brakes are well spaced and the shifter itself is a quality item. Manual transmission is not always available in cheap cars.

A classic-style steering wheel telescopes with a thin rim to greet the driver, and the grips are very soft. The steering wheel is very large. If Mazda wants to bring back the MPS badge, we’d like to see a slightly smaller steering wheel.

The old man gives, but takes away. The third screen is too far away from the driver and after spending time in the new Kia Celto, it feels small.
It’s not a touchscreen, which is annoying when you’re using Apple CarPlay, though graphics and animations are slow.
There’s no wireless phone charger, and the two USB ports hidden under the jump-and-solder center stack are USB-A units, not the more modern USB-C, a change that’s said to be coming later this year.
There’s not enough storage space, from the door bins to the transmission tunnel, which is about the size of a wallet and phone/purse, but the glove compartment/storage is half smart.

Rear seat space has taken a hit in the last 3, making it less practical than its predecessors.
Large pillars, narrow windows and small doors make it dark, and neither the bedroom nor the master bedroom are anything special.
It’s a Toyota Corolla, but the back of a Volkswagen Golf, Kia Cerato or Hyundai i30 is a great place to hang out if you’re an adult.
On the plus side, there’s an air vent along with a center sliding sleeve. The outer seats have ISOFIX points and there are three anchor points for child seats.

Mazda 3 Hatch does not have a large trunk with 295 liters of space. There is a boot lip and the nice hatch opening is not as big as the Golf.
That being said, the boot itself is a very useful shape – you put a set of golf clubs in there, and the rear seats lie flat, which is better than can be said for the Corolla. There is a spare wheel that saves space under the floor.
Power for the G25 versions comes from the third most powerful engine Mazda has ever offered. It is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder unit that produces 138 kW of power and 252 Nm of torque.
While most owners prefer to pair it with a six-speed torque converter, our tester came with the cheaper six-speed manual transmission.

Combined cycle fuel consumption is 6.3L/100km, but we saw 7.5-8.0L/100km behind the wheel.

Although not a sports car, the Mazda has struck a good balance between offering a comfortable ride and spirited performance.
The car does a great job of keeping city streets at bay, and potholes or high-speed bumps don’t affect the cabin.

At highway speeds, it feels good and has a good impact on wind and road noise. The cleanliness of the cabin used to be Mazda’s weakness, but now it is one of the strengths of this brand.
Mazda’s steering wheel is conventional, meaning it’s a bit heavier than some rivals, and the center is flat. Easy to park in the city, but so is an open road car.
He points the 3 into a corner and holds it so well and is so happy to change course so quickly that some of his sportier rivals will feel sorry for him.
Combined with a manual transmission and a 2.5-liter engine, the large chassis makes this car a compelling alternative to the Hyundai i30 N Line.

Mazda’s lane keeping system prevents you from trying to fight the steering wheel with your hands if you veer into the white lines, intervenes gently when necessary, and adaptive cruise maintains a gap with the car in front. The learning curve here is much smoother than some of its competitors.
The Mazda 3 has a 5 star ANCAP safety rating with a score of 98%, 89% in adult protection, 89% in child protection, 81% in road user protection and 76% in safety support.
Most competitors offer a 15,000km range, something to keep in mind if you drive a lot of miles.
Mazda doesn’t sell as many as 3, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good car.

It’s a great little car to drive with a chassis and engine that’s a joy to drive. And it looks a little sportier in the Evolve SP specs. It’s a shame that Mazda doesn’t offer a more powerful engine.
The idea of a modern MPS is tempting, and the success of the Toyota Corolla GR, Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf R shows that Australians love hot hatches.
