Kia’s latest vehicle is the battery-electric EV6. Designed as a wagon-like crossover, it looks more like a wagon than an SUV. And that means it’s a great ride.

There are some downsides to the 2022 Kia EV6, the main one being that its wagon-like design means less cargo space. Its real-world mileage is also highly dependent on driving style, and some of the advanced features are a bit cheesy, but this next-generation electric car is definitely one of the best cars we’ve driven so far.

There’s no denying the fact that the new Kia EV6 is one of the best-looking cars on the market today. With sweeping front fenders, strong body lines and a sleek hatchback, the EV6 has lines and curves that demand attention without being intoxicating.

There are four trim levels and two powertrain configurations. First is a rear-mounted electric motor that delivers 167 horsepower (124.5 kW) to the rear axle, with a 58 kWh battery, giving it an EPA-estimated range of 232 miles (373 km) on a full charge. Another option, which is standard on all versions above the base model, is a 225 hp engine. (167.8 kW) on that rear axle and a 77.4 kWh battery with an EPA range of 310 miles (499 km) on a full charge.

With the second engine, the system can be upgraded to all-wheel drive, adding a motor to the front axle for a combined 320 hp. (238.5 kW). Battery size remains the same, but the EPA estimate drops to 274 miles (441 km) with the addition of AWD.

However, our real-world experience didn’t find the EPA ratings accurate for the AWD model we drove. Our driving and test laps on the highway only returned about 255 miles (410 km) of total available mileage. Part of this is likely due to more highway use (above 55 mph/88.5 km/h) than we had in official EPA testing. We used about 31.2 kWh per 100 miles of driving, or about 10 percent less than EPA estimates. This is typical of most EVs we’ve driven where highway mileage is a big factor.

It is worth noting that the 2022 Kia EV6 is compatible with the latest 350 kW DC fast chargers. That means the next generation of fast chargers now making their way to US stations will be an option for EV6 drivers. For home charging we have a 50-A level 2 service that delivers up to 40-A. The EV6 charges in about 6.5 hours after that, taking 80 percent of the battery’s capacity in the first four hours of charging time. It’s also worth noting that Kia has a 10-year warranty on both the drivetrain and battery here, so worries about mileage loss and battery damage are covered.

Beyond its looks, though, the Kia EV6’s best features are its interior experience and ride quality. It has comfortable seating for four and five. Like most midsize or small cars, the middle of the back seat is not the most comfortable place in the car. Headroom and legroom are also good. The lack of a central cam, as there is no drive shaft, means the middle seat is better than most.

The technology in the 2022 EV6 is good, though not as prominent as you’ll find in some luxury brands. The infotainment screen is a good size and easy to operate, but the driver aids are sometimes a bit confusing – especially the adaptive cruise, which often slows down unnecessarily and takes a while to figure out. It can then be accelerated.

Driving the EV6 is an amazing experience. It handles well, is perfectly balanced and delivers plenty of power when needed. Like all electric cars, the Kia EV6 can deliver full torque at all times, meaning acceleration is extraordinary. Using the deceleration option (rider-switchable) to charge the battery means adding more power with less braking. Every drivetrain in the EV6 is close to that of a sports car, but without the bumpy suspension and loud road noise usually associated with these cars.

Overall, we found the 2022 Kia EV6 to be a great entry into the growing electric vehicle market, and we believe it can compete even with the combustion engine options it competes with. It is a powerful, well-built and beautiful car. We’d put it up against the Ford Mustang Mach-E or the Volkswagen ID.4 as the main contenders.

After launching the EV9, Kia copied 75% of the images to create the EV5. OK, that’s a bit harsh, but this SUV shares many styling cues with the larger EV9.

It has the same square shape as its big brother, although the slimmer headlights give it a different, more angular look. The interior is also similar to the EV9, although it has fewer rows of seats.

Under the skin you can have up to n 83 kWh battery with an impressive range of 447 miles. Expect a price tag of around £40,000 if the car comes to the UK.
