Sony entered the console market in 1994 with the introduction of the PlayStation. The product was announced at the Nintendo Corporation Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in May 1991 under the name “Play Station”. After that partnership fell apart, Sony launched its own console. The PlayStation launched in Japan after the launch of its competitor, the Sega Saturn, and was a huge success in stores with long queues, selling 100,000 units on the first day and then two million units after six months on the market.
Sony’s approach to third-party developers was a big part of the PlayStation’s success. By the end of 1996, nearly 400 games had been developed for the PlayStation, compared to 200 and 60 games for the Saturn and Nintendo 64, respectively. The PlayStation Controller is the first controller released by Sony that uses the geometric shapes of a green triangle, a red circle, a blue cross, and a pink square. The initial version was released with the console on December 3, 1994. Six years later, a redesigned slim version with the same hardware specifications was released under the name PS One. They replaced the original gray color with white and gave it an appropriate name to avoid confusion with its successor, the PlayStation 2. In September 2004, Sony introduced its third major hardware release. In late October 2004, a smaller, thinner and quieter Slim version of the PlayStation 2 was released, which included a built-in Ethernet port.
