The base of the UPPAbaby Mesa car seat attaches to the vehicle using a unique self-retracting LATCH system called Smart Secure. Just click on the LATCH connectors and push down firmly. The retractors work like charms and have an indicator window that changes from green to red when the seat is secured. This tension gauge measures pressure under the base, so it works for seat belt devices in addition to LATCH. There are also internal buckles for installing seat belts. The base itself is a slim, low-profile design that gives parents a clear vantage point to make sure the car seat is properly secured and fits well, even on contoured car seats. Both sides of the seat have an adjustable level and an easy-to-read level indicator. The bottom of the base is fully machined, eliminating the need for a seat protector under the car seat (a CPST no-no).
