I replaced the batteries before Christmas….they work fine. So it didn’t work until I replaced the battery for at least 7 months.
My key battery went flat a few months ago and was sitting on a shelf until last week when I replaced the battery and it worked immediately, no need to reset.
Like other keys it has EPROM memory (not EEPROM) which means it is difficult to code before programming…..

The good news is that I’m on stage and I have to touch the keyboard to make it work.
Both shipments died yesterday, so Halfrads £7.98p and 10 minutes later both returned.
I doubt the lifespan of these batteries is 5 years because they both die at the same time, more or less.

One thing is that the contacts on the battery can change over time. This happens when the battery is low and pressing the buttons too hard. I’ve had cases where I’ve replaced the battery only to find the fob is still faulty. What to do – Gently press the contacts to make good contact with the battery. But don’t push it too hard or break it. Asking £230 for a new one!

Local key cutter batteries are £2.50 each, that’s 50p a year or 1/7p a day!

Normally I’d wait until I have a finished product and a few more pictures, but I’m excited to get started. I hate how big the keyboard is in 2020. I don’t like the side buttons, too easy to accidentally press with clumsy sausage fingers. I love the lock/unlock button and keyless entry push button, and I don’t think I’ve used the button fob since the day I got the car. So all I really need is a fob and battery and the rest is junk. I understand that it is not for everyone, but for everyone. Today I spent a few minutes taking apart the switch. Surprisingly, it is very simple and straightforward. When I replaced the battery and left with no broken parts, I couldn’t find any instructions on how to disconnect the battery. I will take pictures of the process if anyone is interested. I haven’t figured out how to remove the main assembly ring, and I’m not willing to break out the science key, but I don’t need to remove it yet, so I’m moving on. Here’s what Mazda offers:
This is a great unit. It looks well thought out and put together, but I still don’t need it in my pocket. Here is the largest fob and the smallest:
The plan is to design and 3D print a minimal housing to keep the board and battery safe. If you make it big enough to cover the board without the flash, it’s very easy to bend and break. I hide the side buttons because I don’t like them. If I do, I have another key. It should be pocketed and forgotten. I was secretly hoping it would be smaller across the board, but it was. I will update as the design develops. I am planning two parts, one to support the board and one to store the battery. If I sell the cables and can’t open it up and get out of the stock connection, I’ll get a modified + connection. It’s great for those who want to print out these pieces and make them themselves because it’s more open-ended and fun. I will forgive when the bridge comes. I also use small screws (I’m an RC guy so I have a lot of screws)
