That’s $3,000 less than the Azami AWD in the lineup and $4,000 more than the front-wheel-drive version with the same trim level.
That’s roughly in line with the Hyundai Palisade Elite V6 FWD ($65,900 before on-roads), as well as the smaller (but more luxurious) Santa Fe Highlander 2.2 diesel AWD ($66,500 before on-roads).
It still looks classy, especially with the red leather seats standard on the GT SP, and most materials are quite soft. The seats are soft armchairs, the steering wheel is trimmed in wax leather and the center armrest feels as plush as you’d expect.

You can happily spend the whole day behind the wheel – and with us – without getting tired. The ergonomics are excellent, and there are plenty of places to store essentials you need when traveling or raising children.
Mazda recently updated the CX-9 with a larger infotainment screen that runs more modern software borrowed from the latest Model 3. The 10.25-inch Mazda Connect screen looks sharp and responds quickly to BMW-style steering wheel commands in the transmission tunnel.
It’s disappointing that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can’t be controlled via touch controls, and Mazda doesn’t offer wireless smartphone mirroring in the CX-9 as it does in some other models.
The sunroof also feels more like a hatch, given the panoramic unit found on the Hyundai Palisade, which takes away from the luxury feel.

Despite the sunroof, there’s plenty of headroom, and USB ports and air vents for rear passengers are welcome. Two middle row seats with captain’s chairs are optional on the Azami LE, and our tester is a seven-seater with a standard three-seat bench.
The third row is one of the best in the large SUV class, with plenty of room for big kids. They are also not designed for short trips as they have enough knee and head room to make the trip there comfortable.
There are also cup holders and a USB valve on the back. As a part-time set of seats for football matches, they are ideal, although parents who regularly use all seven seats will need to find a suitable place for people.
For parents with multiple children, the second-row seats have ISOFIX and upper restraints, while both third-row seats also have upper restraints.

Power in the CX-9 range comes from a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and on-demand four-wheel drive.
It produces an output of 170 kW at 5000 rpm and a torque of 420 Nm at 2000 rpm. The load capacity with brakes is 2000 kg, without brakes it is reduced to 750 kg.
Claimed fuel economy is 9.0L/100km on the combined cycle, but over the life of the car we only saw between 11 and 12L/100km.
This is primarily an American product, so there is no diesel. That gap was filled by the smaller CX-8 and will soon be filled by the CX-90, but it also goes a long way to explaining why the car has a relaxed attitude on the open road.

Even with the sporty 20-inch wheels, the ride is well-balanced, allowing you to navigate potholed city streets with no problem. The car hides its bulk well at low speeds and feels good at highway speeds. Big tops can float a bit, but that’s to be expected from a big heavy bus on steel springs.
In 2020, we were impressed with how the pre-facelift CX-9 handled a fully loaded drive from Melbourne to the Victorian Highlands. The latest model offers the same unwavering feeling when you point your nose at the open road.
Mazda’s driver aids are well calibrated. Adaptive cruise smoothly maintains distance from the vehicle in front, lane keeping assist isn’t too focused and the blind spot monitor is handy if there are heads in the back seat blocking the outward view.
At lower speeds, the CX-9 hides its size well. It is over 5 meters long, but the high driving position and light steering make it a car that easily fits into tight spaces.

The reversing camera isn’t particularly clear, and the lack of a surround camera means you’re more reliant on the less accurate graphics of the nose-mounted parking sensor in some places. We expect the new CX-90 to have a full set of high-definition cameras to match what the Germans offer, as this is one of the last black spots on the CX-9.
As much as Australians love diesel engines in big family haulers, the CX-9’s petrol engine is impressive.
It runs smoothly and quietly, with maximum torque starting at just 2,000 rpm. The way it rides that wave of low-end torque is very diesel-like and gives the car a laid-back character under the stress of everyday driving. There’s also enough power to handle fully loaded freeway driving, although the CX-9 likes to drink if you push it hard.
The steering is linear and well-weighted, and the torque converter automatically switches to manual mode quickly enough to justify the cost.

The brakes can stop such a large and heavy animal, and body roll remains under control. When it comes to size, the CX-9 can go a little further.
The CX-9 has a five-star ANCAP rating based on tests conducted in 2016. It received an overall score of 35.87 out of 37.00.
Dual front airbags, side airbags and side airbags are standard across the range. All three rows of seats have curtain airbags, and all seats have seat belt reminders.
Service required every 12 months or 10,000 kilometers. Most competitors offer a longer range of 15,000 km, which is worth considering if you do a lot of highway driving.
