The new crossover is far more durable than before, but it hasn’t lost its style. It looks like a pretty complete package, but is it the best option or should we be looking at something more rounded? Well, if you want a rugged crossover addiction, the choice has been the Subaru Forester for ages. Like Mazda, it was recently revealed with updates for the new model year, but what’s the best? Let’s find out.
Mazda equipped the cx-50 with black knobs around the wheel arches, raised suspension and various other off-road features including a fake front skid plate. In the Foresta, the design is less modern and slightly renovated than the previous one. Nothing is wrong. Of course, the Forester is less attractive, but it is not unpleasant to look at, and the same qualities in the plastic road accent and roof rails, especially in the desert model, where you have very noticeable driving characteristics. We’d rather see a CX-50 auto, but we know the Forstra will stop if it gets rough and bumpy. Mazda wins this round.
First Look Review: 2023 Mazda Cx 50
Design-wise, the Forester looks more compact inside than the CX-50, but both are well laid out and offer everything you need from a crossover. The Cx-50 offers a panoramic sunroof for the first time, along with the availability of anti-stitch leather, a shapeless appearance package, a clean and classy steering wheel, and a ton of trash cans. It looks like a show, but the Forester is interesting in other ways. The cabin is mostly StarTex with some brass accents that add excitement along with the metal pedals. The eight-inch infotainment display thanks to dials and buttons, but the interior is all about practicality, Subaru promises exceptional resistance to dirt and moisture. We like the CX-L’s looks better, but regular adventurers will be less pained to get the Forester’s interior dirty.
The Cx-50 is offered with two naturally aspirated 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engines that are said to produce approximately 187 horsepower and 186 s-ft of gold. Turbocharged options can make up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft, but electric variants are on the way. The CX-50 delivers grunt to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic and multi-mode i-Active all-wheel drive system. Only one of these paths is located on the road, which shows that it is more than a hiking fanatic’s pavement. This will be proven or disproved when you get behind the wheel, but our prediction is that the Subaru will handle the practical stuff best, while the Mazda will probably be more fun to drive on tarmac.
The Mazda may come with an aging transmission, but it gets an aging Scooby engine mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The 2.5-liter Boxer four in the Foresta makes 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque and can support up to 3,000 pounds of lateral pull. With an off-road X-Mode that optimizes the Forester’s handling, we expect this off-road model to challenge some custom-built options, especially in the desert. Again, we’ll wait until we’ve driven both the CX-50 and the Forester for a definitive opinion, but based on past experience, we expect to really enjoy pushing the Subaru’s limits on the trail, perhaps preferring the Mazda. for everyday driving.
Mazda hasn’t announced pricing for the new CX-50, but we expect it to arrive with a base MSRP close to $28,000 but no more than $30,000. If so, Forester’s case becomes more complicated. In desert trim, this crossover starts at $33,945 including destination. Go for the top Touring trim and you’ll pay more than $36,000. Of course, it’s hard to put a price on the dependable, reliable, and safe Subaru model everyone knows it is, but if the Mazda Forester makes the cut. It’s long so we think the cx-50 is the way to go. At off-road speed, the Mazda’s significant power advantage — 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on premium throttle versus the Subaru’s 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet — doesn’t make a significant difference either. While the Forester Solitude shares its performance with other Forester models, it has a unique transmission that makes it faster and more responsive. In cases where the speed does not exceed 15 mph or more, the performance is not final, and this SUV has no significant advantage in the way of throttle response or pedal modulation.
Both SUVs completed the road, but the CX-50 produced a lot of hard bumps and generally felt unhappy over bumps, rocks and paint on the trail. With the CX-L, Mazda chases confidence from the floor, but this one just wants to seriously get you off the road, and that’s pretty obvious here. They do what we do but complain about everything. The only advantage you’ll find in the Wilderness Forester is a larger camera view so you can see what’s ahead when descending.

However, the desert ranger easily completed the course. While the CX-L only has one Off-Road mode, the Forester Wilderness’s X-mode all-wheel drive system has multiple modes and is more confident in rough terrain; It’s an effortless steep push while the cx-50 melts away. The Forester’s off-road-tuned suspension also eats up bumps without tipping the owner over.

Both SUVs have a different approach to aesthetics. It’s a CX-50 slim, and like the rest of Mazda’s lineup, it looks more premium inside and out — maybe a little.
