Patients with IBS are at high risk of developing unhealthy eating habits due to frequent consumption of restrictive foods. Additionally, up to 90% of IBS patients will avoid certain foods to prevent or improve their gastrointestinal symptoms. Although this may be a normal response, it can get out of hand and lead to a long list of “bad” foods and a short list of “safe” foods. There is a growing awareness of severe, harmful dietary restrictions among adult GI patients, affecting approximately 15-20%.

That’s why it’s so important to discuss any dietary changes with a health professional (such as a registered dietitian). They can assess individual conditions affecting IBS while helping to ensure nutritional needs are met through good nutrition and healthy eating habits.

Eating seems to trigger symptoms. It is possible that the process of eating, rather than a particular food, is causing your symptoms. Eating stimulates the gastrointestinal tract, which can be overloaded due to IBS.
